Weekly Poll Followup: Android tablets win bya landslide

Last week weaskedwhich type of tablet was your favorite. Just about everyone has used one at this point, and most of us have at least one floating around our homes. 
There is definitely some variety in the type of tablets currently on the market with options like the MicrosoftSurface, AppleiPad, and plenty of Android tablets to boot. It's quite apparent that Android tablets are currently the most popular though.
There were four options in last week's poll. Android tablets, iPad and iPad Mini, Surface tablets, orother Windows tablets. Out of these Android certainly has the largest variety of tablets available for you to play with, which is why it's unsurprising that they won outthis week's poll with a whopping 64% of the overall vote.
So Android were the clear winner for the poll this week, and had 4,581 votes in their favor. Apple tablets came in second place with 20 percent of the vote, and 1,431 individual vote. In third place was the Surface tablet with 859 votes and 12 percent of the vote.
 In last place were other Windows tablets who managed to grab up just 214 votes at 3 percent of all votes. While it really wasn't surprising tosee Android come in first place, the fact that they had more than twice the number of votes of any other category is a bit telling.

From Marx to Microsoft: the origins of flat design

Help me. I’m on a laptop running Windows 8 right now. 
Like many others, I hate it and think it’s the worst operating system since the not-so-distant Vista. 
If I didn’t have to use it, I might be able to appreciate for a second that Microsoft made a 
bold design decision that actually ended up being influential. 
Microsoft’s Metro design language was one of the first instances of flat design in technology and it came in the least likely form: a terrible mp3 player nobody bought apart from this one kid at my school. The short-lived Zune . 
Windows 8 came six years after the Zune and used the same design language, but since it was seen by more than five people it had a much larger sphere of influence. 
Although I’m not sure how much attention Apple pays to Microsoft’s products, it seems they grabbed Apple by the shoulders and shook the clunky, skeuomorphic excesses away. The next iOS after Windows 8 had left the old ways behind. 
In iOS 7 there was not a leather-bound book, bevelled button or drop-shadow in sight. 
Within the space of a few months, the two major software developers in the world popularized what has since been called flat design. 
Let’s take a deeper look at the roots of flat design — the style Microsoft brought to the world’s attention, then watched every designer do it better. 
Modernism: pure functionality 
It’s because of modernist architecture that I live in a brutalist, Soviet-era block of plain concrete apartments, built to house as many people in the smallest amount of space possible. 
Popular in the 1920s, Modernism emphasised practical, stripped-back design and cut out everything unnecessary. 
Modernist design was pure function — a rebellion against the gilt-framed portraits of queens and angels and the grand Victorian manors which still exist in some parts of London. 
The way that the modernists trimmed functional items down to the barest necessities is similar to today’s move towards flat design. There’s not a lot of art from the period that reflects flat design, but modern architects inspired by thinkers like Karl Marx showed the world that luxury doesn’t always equal good design. 
Mondrian nailed the Windows 8 UI in the 1940s 
The design principles of modernism were expressed by Piet Mondrian’s minimalist work in the 1940s, which I used to like a lot more before Windows 8 came around. Now whenever I look at his art I expect the squares to awkwardly start spinning around at uneven intervals… 
*shudder* 
Anyway, we’ll get back to Windows 8 later. The next stage of flat design formation builds on the minimalism of the 1940s and combines it with Apple’s favorite font. 
Swiss Style & Helvetica 
Bright, geometric shapes, sans-serif typefaces and total lack of shadow or depth. Look familiar? If the founders of Swiss style were to have set up shop in 2012 creating landing pages for SaaS companies, they’d be loaded. 
Helvetica , developed in 1957 by Max Miedinger and Eduard Hoffmann, is one of the most popular sans-serif typefaces. The reason it became so popular is similar to the reasons behind the shift towards modernism in the 1920s and today’s flat design trend. 
Above all, Helvetica is practical. It’s easy to read at a distance, even in small sizes. That made it perfect for posters like the ones above. It’s no-frills, meaning it lends itself well to minimalism. Unlike script and serif typefaces, Helvetica doesn’t mess around with unnecessary curls, flicks and wiggles (expert typographical terms). 
Design in the Swiss style retained popularity all the way up to the point where it was possible to transition the principles into the digital space. Somewhere along the way, however, there was a revolution. 
Technology imitates life 
As I looked at in an earlier post about the user onboarding process , it can be hard for software designers to ease the user’s transition into a new piece of technology. When the first graphical user interfaces (GUIs) came out, they mirrored the layout of a real desktop, with icons representing their physical equivalents (stacks of paper, the clipboard, a calculator, the trash can, etc). 
Apple kept this up for a long time. 
From the ripped paper edges of the iCal to the varnished wooden shelves filled with eBooks, 
Steve Job’s design principles stated that if something were to be easy to use, it had to look familiar. Apple’s user interfaces got shinier as time went on , and with each graphical overhaul the icons became glossier, with more complex drop-shadows and deeper gradients. 
Around the same time, Microsoft was rolling out the monstrously awful Aero design on Vista — an attempt to out-gloss Apple which thankfully didn’t last long. 
Between 2006 and 2012, Apple and Microsoft were engaged in a battle to see who could make their UI look more bloated and gross. 
Then, as if the bubble burst, in October 2012 everything went flat. 
Windows 8 set low standards for flat design 
When Windows 8 came out with its new flat interface in 2012, plenty of people, myself included, were revolted. 
The sidebar appeared when I needed it least accompanied by that ridiculous rectangle displaying the time and date. Half of the interface insisted on being permanently full-screen, and Microsoft took one last stab at Internet Explorer before admitting that the only thing it’s used for is to download Chrome or Firefox. 
It took the adept hand of Apple to do what all good tech companies do: take Microsoft’s ideas and actually execute them properly . 
Before flat design got its name, Windows 8 was discussed in terms of a ‘metro design’ language. It’s only when iOS 7 came out that people started talking about flat design. 
No one wanted to use it when it was associated with Windows 8, but Apple’s beautiful rendition saved flat design from the same fate as the Zune. 
What’s next after flat design? 
According to Wells Riley , design is nothing more than a form of problem-solving . A problem with flat UIs is that they have a tendency to leave a lot of the functionality up to your imagination because there is no room for clutter. With a limited number of ways to make elements stand out, flat UIs can be as beautiful as they are confusing. Wells says: 
“Unlabeled icons look great in a screenshot, but will a user understand what they do? Will they make the product easier to use? Will they help make the product useful? Think about whether or not your aesthetic decisions will hinder your solution to the customer’s problem.” 
This was back in 2013 around the same time as Dropbox’s flat UI overhaul which caused mass user confusion. It’s been two years, but I’d say with a degree of certainty that most have gotten used to it. 
If you haven’t, well… Why don’t you go and install Windows Vista if you love bevels so much!

What Panos was telegraphing about those new Lumias

Microsoft's Windows 10 Devices event on Tuesday goes down as one of their best shows yet. The presentation was convincing, there were no real lags, and the products announced were all awe-inspiring. Well, almost.
One area though that was rather peculiar was in regards to Panos Panay's presentation on new Lumias. Specifically, the short duration and lack of enthusiasm were quite evident. It felt like he wanted to get through it get on to the real story, those new Surfaces. 
I even joked that Microsoft may squeeze in the Lumia 550 during the event, and sure enough it got about 15 seconds of stage time.Not the Microsoft Lumias you were looking for?I have been talking about these new Lumias for some time on our#AskDanWindows series specifically about the origins of the phones.
 It should be clear that these new Lumias are carryovers from the Nokia days and not"pure" Microsoft devices. That is not a slight against how good they are – something we still don't know much aboutbut rather a clear observation about how Microsoft feels about these phones.
It should be obvious that Microsoft stands firmly behind these devices like any other Lumias. As they should, they pack more hardware and features into one device that many Android ones spread over a range. Expandable memory, Qi wireless, an iris scanner, Gorilla Glass 4, liquid cooling, Continuum, and a killer camera are all a big deal.
 Still, they feel like stopgaps a bit too.Remember, these Lumias started at Nokia during a big transition time for the company. They were not designed from scratch by Microsoft something I expect to happen sometime in May 2016 with their long-gestating Intel-powered phone aka "Surface phone," which I mentioned back in July (see below).Microsoft's Satya Nadella says if OEMs don't make Windows phones they will 
What was on stage 
When you take a look at the Band 2, Surface Pro 4, Surface Book and HoloLens,there is a clear cutting-edge design aesthetic running through those devices. The Band 2's fantastic display, which is much more touch-sensitive is a carry overfrom the Surface. Even the Lumia 950 XL's liquid cooling system is borrowed from the Surface.
Should we be surprised at any of that? Not at all. Panos Panay is in charge of all Microsoft hardware taking over the Lumia division in July. Panay even hedges at the beginning of his Lumia presentation saying he has only worked with that team for a "very short time." I read that – as did many others – as code for 'Hey, these are notmyphones, and I would have done things differently.' It's distancing.
Thinking about it makes sense. The Microsoft hardware team clearly agonizes over minute details in their creations. When handling the Band 2 you can feel the engineering quality. And don't get me started on how radically insane the Surface Book is from a design perspective.When you see all of Microsoft's new premium hardware and then glance over at the Lumias you cannot help but see something is, well,off.
Continuum is just the beginning Microsoft Continuumfor the phone is easily one of the most interesting aspects of the new Lumias. However, being able to run Universal Windows Apps on a large display means you are carrying a Windows RT device around with you. Granted, in Windows 10 the UWA model is much better, but you still cannot run x86 apps on your phone.
If I had to guess – and once again this should be evident – Microsoft keeps talking about "Windows 10 in your pocket" and that idea only really resonates if you can run full desktop apps.I have reported before about a Microsoft-Intel phone, and my bet is Microsoft's goalis for you to be able to run x86 apps with Continuum from your phone. What we see with the Lumia 950 and Lumia 950 XL is one step towards that goal. You can hear more about that in Episode 4 of#AskDan Windows from August, including some well-informed foreshadowing about this "Surface phone".
#AskDan Windows Episode 4 - When can we expect Win10 Mobile with Intel?This goal is not easy, but the technology to enable it to happen is finally within reach. Just listening to Microsoft's language about Continuum tells you that yeah, they want you to have a full PC in your pocket (yes, and we've come full circle with the PocketPC branding).I still don't know if we will have a Surface phone per se, but you can bet that Microsoft is going to go for something crazy now that Panay and his group are heading things. Remember, Surface is more than just a name, it's anidea. These Lumias don't fit.
TakeawayThis situation is one of those "good news / bad news" moments. The bad news is what I have been saying for months: these are not pure Microsoft phones. But hey, new high-end phones with Nokia DNA is still a good problem to have. I have no concern about picking up a Lumia 950 for my usage (I worry more about the OS part).The upshot is we have witnessed Microsoft being very serious about hardware, not just in attempts but delivering high-end, premium, hardware that leave people shocked.Is there any reason to believe Microsoft cannot do the same with phones?They can and I'm sure they will.
Just ask yourself: 
Would the same group who made Band, Surface, now Xbox and even HoloLens make the Lumia 950?Probably not. So, if those phones feel out of place, well, it's because they are. Panos Panay only took on the phone development team in late July. That should tell you something about whatever comes next. Does that mean you should skip the Lumia 950 and 950 XL? Ultimately,that depends on your wallet. If you don't mind getting a phone a year – which is where things are going now – then I'd grab a new Lumia and use it until Microsoft's next big thing. I am and have no qualms about it.
I think the important message after Tuesday's event is that Microsoft is very serious about hardware –all hardware – and we still have to see their full effort in every category. It doesn't even matter how well these new Lumias do, to be honest. If Microsoft can build a killer product like theSurface Pro 3 / 4 and Surface Book they can also drive demand for a world-class phone in 2016.They are capable.
Apple did it, and Microsoft proved Tuesday they can do it too. Doing yet another high-end phone won't save Windows 10 Mobile, but Microsoft has shown they can go beyond just specs and I think they will.
Buckle in, folks, we're in for a very exciting Microsoft lead future. You should be convinced that Microsoft and phones are here to stay. We haven't seen everything yet.

Microsoft's 'you are the hub' Windows 10 strategy is about us and here is why it matters

No single device will be the hub of activity forever. The hub is you."These were among the closing words from Microsoft's CEO Satya Nadella as he concluded Microsoft's highly anticipated, and in my estimation, successful#Windows10 Devices event on October 6th, 2015.
Nadella's closing remarks summarized a dynamic event that seemed to resonate with the audience. 
Beginning with the Xbox and ending with the world's most powerful laptop, the newSurface Book, the event communicated one major theme. Though the day was a means to showcase devices it was the Universal Windows Platform took center stage. High-end first party hardware were simply the stage lights used to illuminate Microsoft's mobility play: their universal device agnostic platform.
The entire range of this family of devices runs on Microsoft'sUniversal Windows Platform (UWP). And of course, this platform has the users experience at its core.I shared in, "Microsoft is positioned beyond the mobile curve," that the future of computing is "device-less" and the primary computing device is the cloud. Nadella's summation of the day's events seemed to validate those words.
 "…The hub is you."Perfect 10Terry Myerson opened the event with the staggering stat that in just ten weeks time 110 million devices are now running Windows 10. In less than three months there are more devices running Windows 10 than there are running Apple's OS X.
Microsoft's goal is to reach 1 billion devices running Windows 10 within 2-3 years. This initial pace toward that goal is reassuring. Particularly considering that Windows is a universal platform hosting a family of devices. As such, just as a human family with all the variations among its members shares common genes, the Microsoft family of devices share a common core.
This common core allows developers to target the entire UWP (Universal Windows Platform) with their apps. There are currently a limited number of universal apps available, but the demonstration of core apps like Office reveals the key claim of the platform. Namely the seamless transition of a user's experiences across devices or device states (in the case of continuum).
Windows 10 adoption has had derivative effects on Microsoft's ecosystem as well. According to Terry Myerson, in the three months since its release there have been 1.25 billion visits to the app store. That translates to a four-time increase in revenue for developers.
Money talks. This growth speaks volumes to the claim by Microsoft that their massive PC install base could be used to bolster the UWP. Now I don't know if it wasthese numbers or backroom negotiations that have influenced coming partnerships,but it is good to hear that certain popular mainstream apps will be going universal in Windows 10. 
Facebook's Instagram and Messenger along with Soda Saga and other apps will soon be experienced across users devices as Universal Windows apps.The additional fact, per Myerson that users are spending more time in apps such as Netflix rather than the website is key to universal apps success.
 As these and other universal apps carry user's experiences across devices, Nadella's word's echo, "You are the hub."Gaming Though Xbox news wasn't at the top of the October 6th event wish list, gaming is core to the Windows experience. The continuity across Microsoft's gaming platform, which encompasses Windows and Xbox, deserves some attention.
PC gaming caters to a vast audience. Hardcore Xbox gamers are also a large demographic. Thus Microsoft, by way of its OS and console is devoted to gaming. Through Windows 10 Redmond has brought those two disparate mediums, console and PC, closer together.
The 120 years of gameplay streamed from the Xbox to Windows 10 devices in less than three months, per Myerson, is a powerful testimony of this universal platform. Windows 10's provisioning of a means to allow hardcore game experiences to follow users through their PC's, tablets, laptops and 2-in-1s to any room in the house has clearly resonated with gamers.
Gamers can play Xbox games, controller and all, from their PCs as if they were playing from the traditional position in front of the television. The device no longer matters. Microsoft is indeed proving that Windows 10 is a universal platform centered around the user's experiences. 
Gamers, "you are the hub."
Cortana 
In the three months since Windows 10 arrived with Cortana in tow (for some regions), the personal assistant "has answered over 1 billion questions," Myerson shared. Users are talking to Cortana. With her cross platform moves to Android and iOS via the Windows 10 companion apps and her inherent position in Windows Phone she will follow users anywhere. With her handy 'Notebook' where everything she knows about users is stored, she will remember interests, appointments, favorite places and more regardless of the device she will assist users from. Cortana users, "You are the hub."
HoloLens 
HoloLens is likely Microsoft's most ambitious product. The device seems like something out of science-fiction. The mixed-reality gaming demonstration where a wearable, form-shifting hologram transformed from a hand borne laser gauntlet to a shield simply reaffirmed that feeling. Yet HoloLens is real. As is Microsoft's virtual reality platform, Windows Holographic. Both present an opportunity for developers and OEM partners.
One point Microsoft was certain to stress is that HoloLens is a full, tether less, wearable computer. Though the presentation focused on gaming, HoloLens has potentially profound applications in other areas as well. Science, healthcare, education, architecture and more can benefit from the connected mixed-reality environment HoloLens provides. The infinite malleability of a virtual environment is digital clay that can be molded by the creative imaginations of developers. The possibilities seem endless. After the release of the HoloLens Developer Kit in Q1 2016 for $3000, we will begin to see the vast imaginations of developers pushing creativity to the limits with the platform.
Additionally because HoloLens runs on Window 10, a user's experience will follow them to this device as well."In my case I have a Band. I have my phone. I have my Surface. Productive like a boss 
With an infectious, "I'm just being me" presentation styleBryan Ropertalked to us about how the 5.2"Lumia 950and 5.7"950 XLcould make us more productive. Productive like a boss to be exact. Since these devices are packing 808 hexacore and 810 octacore chipsets respectively, keeping them cool with the liquid cooling system akin to that found in the Surface is important.The specs on both these devices are comparable to what rivals have in the market. But as I shared in Highs and Lows Part V: Continuum, high-end specs is just the price of admission. They simply get Microsoft a seat at the table. Windows phones needed a differentiator and Continuum is it.
 Nadella described these devices as the most productive phones onthe planet and asserted that they could be a user's only computing device.Bryan demonstrated this point effectively. He gave the most practical and comprehensive demonstration of Continuum we've seen to date. With a simple connection to the Microsoft Display Dock (though wireless connection is supported), which connected the device to a larger screen, keyboard and mouse, the Lumia seamlessly transformed into a PC-like experience.
From the Start menu, multitasking, shortcut keys, taskbar, high-speed USB file transfer and more the experience was very much that of a familiar PC. Even an astute onlooker could have easily mistaken the UI on screen as the recently released Windows 10 OS.
Additionally, the ability to continue to use the phone as aphoneand as an independent second screen fortifies the experience. This functionality is something similar tech like that found in theMotorola Atrixwas not capable of doing.
Finally, the power of Universal apps allowsapps to scale appropriately to fit any screen through Continuum. This capability places the Continuum enabled device in the "background" while pulling the users experience forward, allowing theuser to work seamlessly without fussing over hardware. Lumia users, "You are the hub."On the Bandwagon Nadella described the Microsoft Band as a platform of sensors and a cloud service. This description conveys how the Band fits within Microsoft's ecosystem. It's not just hardware. By contrast, Apple's positioning of the Apple Watch is laser-focused on its physical design as seen in an early 12-page spread in Vogue. The Band, however, embodies the vast scope of Microsoft's Health platform.
As Iwrote in the past, the potential licensing of the now 11 sensors to new and old partner OEMs allows Microsoft technology to permeate the industry. Microsoft can effectively become the platform that empowers partner OEM wearable devices. Additionally the cross-platform compatibility of the Band and Microsoft's Health platform allows users to monitor and track their health from any ecosystem and across any device. You arethe hub.Surface, nurture the rhythmAs the tablet that can replace your laptop, the Surface line began Microsoft's introduction of hybrid devices that conform to a user's needs. The event appropriately ended with that line of devices. The newSurface Pro 4, among other things, has a better display, keyboard, pen and is faster than its predecessor. Panos Panay asserted that itis the tablet that will replace your laptop.
Microsoft then introduced what they've dubbed the ultimate laptop, their newSurface Book. Panay shared that this laptop is the thinnest most powerful PC ever built. He then played a clip where the screen of this laptop was removed from the base. To the surprise and delight of onlookers, the Surface Book was also a tablet. Nadella later referred to this device as a clipboard that becomes a laptop. The ability for the world's most powerful laptop to become the world's most powerful tablet provides great opportunities for versatility for power users. A user need not switch devices to accomplish various tasks. The device transitions with the need. Surface users,"You are the hub."

As devices come and go, you persist...What matters most is the mobility of experiences not the mobility of a single device.–NadellaWithout question, the simplest quantifiable number is one. When complex issues are simplified by reducingthe number of variables any challenge is usually more easily managed. Ironically Apple has recently increased its number of Operating Systems with the addition of tvOS to iOS, OS X, and watchOS. Google is struggling with Android and Chrome.
Microsoft committed to creating one core for a family of devices. A single OS for developers to target and for user's computing experiences to exist within. This transition met with hiccups as some Windows Phone 7 users were left hanging at Windows Phone 7.8. Microsoft was mocked as they made UI missteps with Window 8/8.1.Through corporate restructuring with the"One Microsoft" theme underpinning their efforts, Microsoft ultimately succeeded in simplifying a complex issue. They have pioneered a single OS vision across all devices. A Universal Windows Platform with the users experiences at its core.
Windows 10 is about us, the users. It succeeds like no other platform with providing truly personal computing. It is an evolving service. Nadella's cloud-first, mobile-first ambition reduces the sea of devices to a single "device-less platform", where the primary computing "device" is the cloud.
And indeed Nadella confirmed this earlier assessment in his closing to the historic#Windows10 Devices event when he told us - "we are the hub."

Microsoft partners with Baidu to push Windows 10 in China

Windows OS#Windows10#Software–Microsoft partners with Baidu to push Windows 10 in China– Microsoft has partnered with search giant Baidu in China in an effort to push Windows 10 availability in the country.
 In addition, Baidu will also be the default home page and search engine for the new Microsoft Edge browser. The service will deliver Universal Windows Applications for search, videos and more for Windows 10.
According to the Windows 10 blog, “We’re excited to be working with leading hardware and software companies in China to develop ground-breaking devices and consumer experiences for Windows 10.” 
Yusuf Mehdi, Windows and devices vice president and author of the blog added that in partnership with Baidu, “We will make it easy for Baidu customers to upgrade to Windows 10 and we will deliver a custom experience for customers in China, providing local browsing and search experiences.
”In the past, Microsoft has also partnered with Tencent, a social networking and gaming service in the world, Qihoo 360, an internet security company in China along with Lenovo, one of the world’s leading PC manufacturers as well.
Mahdi added that the company has seen great feedback from the Xiaomi program, which is helping them test Windows 10 on mobile devices with a set of Xiaomi Mi 4 power users.
Yusuf Mehdi also points out that, “Baidu’s new Windows 10 distribution channel, Baidu “Windows 10 Express” will make it easy for Chinese Internet users to download an official Windows 10 experience.

On top of insanely fast speeds, the new SSDs are even more efficient than their predecessors and consume less than half the power of a SATA in device sleep mode,according to Samsung. The 950Pro also has Dynamic Thermal Throttling technology, which is supposed to “reduce overheating and maintain a high level of sustained performance.
”The 950 Pro will come in 256GB and 512GB capacities priced at $199.99 and $349.99, respectively. Unfortunately, the new Samsung SSD will come in an M.2 2280 form factor rather than 2.5-inch format, which might make it a tough proposition for certain laptops and desktops that aren’t equipped to handle this particular type of SSD format.

Microsoft to retire Zune services on November 15, convert subscribers to GrooveMusic Pass

Microsoft has started alerting users of the impending retirement of the Zune Music Pass. Alongside the alert, a support document details the transition to theGroove Music Passand the death of the beloved free 10 tracks per month download.
From the Zune retirement FAQ:As of November 15, 2015, Zune services will be retired. You will no longer be able to stream or download content to your device from the Zune music service. 
However, Zune devices will still function as music players and any MP3 content that you own on the Zune device will remain there. You'll also be able to transfer music to and from your Zune player.
So, when November 15 rolls around, Zune Music Pass subscribers will be automatically converted over to Groove Music Pass.
 Microsoft notes that this will occur for monthly subscribers on their next renewal date at a rate of $9.99 per month, while 3-month and annual subscribers will be converted sometime between October and November. It's important to note, however, that Microsoft says 3-month subscribers will be moved to the monthly subscription.

Viggle ending support for its Windows and Windows Phone apps on September 17

Alas, another Windows and Windows Phone app is biting the dust. This time, Viggle, an app that rewards users with points to redeem for TV shows and music by listening or watching, is on the chopping block.
Viggle made the announcement in an email to users, stating the following:Effective Thursday, September 17, 2015, we are no longer supporting the Viggle App for Windows devices. To redeem the Viggle points you've earned, please visit Viggle.com to access millions of rewards that include TV shows, movies, music and more.
Perhaps a bit frustratingly, Viggle then points users to its Android and iOS apps, which are still sticking around.If you weren't aware of Viggle, the app allows users to get rewards by simply watching TV and listening to music. 
When watching a TV show or listening to music, you could open the app, tell it to listen, and then you'd get reward points that you could redeem for song downloads, gift cards, and more. 
It's a bit of an early demise for such an interesting service on the Windows platform, as it made its debut in June of 2014.If you're curious, the app will remain available through September 17, so you can hit up the link below to check it out on the Windows Store.

Microsoft Edge extensions to be in the Store, DLNA streaming and scrolling improvements coming soon Earlier today, the Microsoft Edge team took to Twitter to bravely take user questions from the masses. As it turns out, there were many, many good questions asked. Of course, many of the responses from the Edge team were rather predictable falling into (a) Working on it (B)Expect in the next build (C) It's on the backlog.
One thing is certain, building a browser from the ground up is not trivial.Microsoft Edge Q&A SummaryBrowser extensions will be in the Universal Store No ETA on browser extensions but they "a priority."Extensions are being considered for mobile, but priority for now is desktop

HPis planning to break up into two companies later this year, but that move will also result in up to 30,000 of its workers losing their jobs.HP will break up its enterprise unit away from its PC business, and most of the layoffs will come from the enterprise division.

Microsoft Forces Windows 10 Onto Windows 7 And Windows 8

Windows OS#Windows10#Windows8–Microsoft Forces Windows 10 Onto Windows 7 And Windows 8– Following news that Windows 10 automatically downloads onto Windows 7 and Windows 8 for users who choose to upgrade, Microsoft MSFT+0.41% has now confirmed it has taken things one serious step further: Windows 10 will now download on computers even when users chose NOT to upgrade.
This somewhat shocking development was discovered by The Inquirer when a reader reported Windows 10 had been downloaded onto their computer despite the fact they expressly declined the opportunity to upgrade:“The symptoms are repeated failed ‘Upgrade to Windows 10′ in the WU update history and a huge 3.5GB to 6GB hidden folder labelled ‘$Windows.~BT’,” the reader explained. “I thought Microsoft [said]this ‘upgrade’ was optional. 
If so, why is it being pushed out to so many computers where it wasn’t reserved, and why does it try to install over and over again?He continued: “I know of two instances where people on metered connections went over their datacap for August because of this unwanted download.
My own internet (slow DSL) was crawling for a week or so until I discovered this problem. In fact, that’s what led me to it. Not only does it download, it tries to install every time the computer is booted.”
Microsoft Confirms New Policy
Astonishingly this is not a one-off error. Speaking to The Inquirer, Microsoft confirmed this is now something they are doing to all computers running Windows 7 and Windows 8:“For individuals who have chosen to receive automatic updates through Windows Update, we help upgradable devices get ready for Windows 10 by downloading the files they’ll need if they decide to upgrade. 
When the upgrade is ready, the customer will be prompted to install Windows 10 on the device,” said a Microsoft spokesperson.
Now let’s be clear here: with regards to Windows 7 and Windows 8 “individuals who have chosen to receive automatic updates through Windows Update” is essentially everyone.
So unless you expressly chose to switch off all Windows updates (not recommended), you will be receiving (and have already received) a 3-6GB silent download. As The Inquirer reader points out, this can be found at: C:\$windows.~BT Note this is a hidden folder so to view it you need to open File Explorer and go to: Organize > Folder Options > View > Show hidden files, folders, and drives.
The Fall Out 
So what to make of this? Quite frankly, while opinions remain divided over Windows 10’s forced updates, for Microsoft to presumptuously take a substantial chunk of every Windows 7 and Windows 8 user’s storage (and data allowance) downloading Windows 10 even if they specifically state they do not want to upgrade is a big step too far.
Personally I cannot see what Microsoft is trying to achieve here. When a user wants windows 10 they will expect a large download to begin and there to be some waiting time. But Microsoft downloading Windows 10 anyway just to skip this wait for users who don't want Windows 10 is complete madness.
