Microsoft's next flagship phones likely to support Qualcomm's Quick Charge tech

Microsoft is rumored to launch two flagshipWindows 10 Mobile smart phones later in 2015: the Lumia 950 XL (codenamedCitymanand the Lumia 950 (codenamed Talkman). 
A recent report claims that both devices could support Qualcomm's Quick Charge technology that has allowed other smartphones to charge their batteries up much faster than normal.
This report, from ITHome, isn't much of a shock since Talkman reportedly will have the Qualcomm Snapdragon 808 processor inside while Cityman is rumored to have the more powerful Snapdragon 810 one. 
Both chipsets are already known to support the Quick Charge 2.0 and many recent Android smartphones with Qualcomm processors already support the feature.Our sister site Android Central has done an extensive write-up about Quick Charge,including this bit:
"The tech works by knowing the current condition of your battery and intelligently regulating the power your device is receiving. As a result, your phone will not charge from 70 percent to 100 percent nearly as fast as it will from 0 percent to 60 percent. 
This is why you see almost every Quick Charge ad brag about the ability to go from "dead" to over"half-charged" in as little as 30 minutes.
"Indeed, the ability to quick charge your phone is a top selling point for mobile. Even some Lenovo laptops like the X1 Carbon can charge the battery by 50% in just 30 minutes. 
The notion that Microsoft would license and enable the feature for their flagship phones in 2015 should be quite evident. However, in case you did not know, now you do.

Microsoft's Bing engine is ready to predict the winners of the 2015 NFL football season

Microsoft already has partnerships set up with the National Football League to give teams Surface Pro 3tablets. However, it will also give NFL fans predictions on which teams will win their games in the upcoming 2015 season via the Bingsearch engine.
Microsoft says:"Once the regular season starts, if you search for your favorite team, we will update your team's chances of winning their weekly matchup. If you're a survivor-pool fanatic or simply want to have a point of view at the coffee machine at work, this feature gives you the information you need heading into Sunday.
 But why stop at predicting who's going to win? We're going further this season by giving you the"why" – why we're making the calls we're making, and what it willtake for an upset to happen.
"In addition, Bing will update its NFL power rankings every Tuesday "with predictions of which team Bing thinks will win their respective division, and who is on-pace to earn those elusive wild-card spots." Fantasy football fans will also get help from Bing in terms of which players they should put in place every week and which free agents they should buy. 
It adds:Bing has the bass down too. Before the game we'll have each team's stat leaders and predicted game-changers listed, as well as game location, time and broadcast network.

6tag update adds support for Instagram's new portrait and landscape image formats [Update]

Update: There's yet another new version of 6tag in the store, with the version number 5.6.0.1. It fixes the bug that was causing the app to crash when users were encoding a video during the app update.

Earlier this week,Intstagram announced that it was updating its iOS and Android apps to support viewing images in both portrait and landscape formats, in addition to the regular square format. 
While Instagram hasn't updated its Windows Phone app since March 2014, the popular third-party app6tag just got a new version that allows uploads and viewing images in the new formats.
Here's what's new in the 5.6 version of 6tag:Upload non-square pictures View non-square pictures uploaded by other users Add three new filters: Clarendon, Gingham and MoonTap and hold your picture to quickly compare with and without filter (on filters page)Bugfixes and use last Instagram API 
By the way, 6tag's creator Rudy Huyn has posted word on his Twitter account that there is a bug in the current version of 6tag "if you have a video encoding in progress during the app update".
 He has a fix ready but apparently the Windows Phone Store can't accept new updates for apps at the moment, so be aware of this issue before you download.

XDream X-Power Plus review

We’ve reviewed multiple portable speakers in 2015, from the water-resistant Inateck BTSP-20andDivoom Voombox-party to the decidedly unique BoomBox V2.
 Today, I’m reviewing the XDream X-Power Plus, a device that pulls triple-duty as a portable speaker, power bank, and phone/tablet stand.

*.13 x 3.1cmIt weighs less than most smartphones and the cylindrical shape means the XDream X-Power Plus is quite portable. 
The XDream X-Power Plus’ polished, aluminium finish has an anodized coating which so it’ll be able to take some knocks. I can tell you that the device feels solid enough as it managed to withstand being thrown into my gadget bag without sustaining any damage.
Setup
In the box, you get the XDream X-Power Plus, a travel sleeve with a handy carabiner for attaching it to a rucksack or even a belt loop, and a USB charging cable.
An odd quirk I noticed when I hooked the XDream X-Power Plus up for the first charge is that it needs a male-to-male USB cable to charge instead of the usual micro-USB connection. Not many of us carry a male-to-male USB cable around as standard, but there is a suitable cable included.
Use
To use the XDream X-Power Plus as a speaker, all you have to do is pull the top section of the device away from the body (a spring-loaded mechanism), rotate it roughly ninety degrees, and place your smartphone or tablet onto its exposed audio jack. 
Then, using your favourite music player (orpodcast) app, press play and sound emerges from the speaker around 10 seconds later. Using the XDream X-Power Plus in this way means that you have a handy little smartphone stand as well, with the phone or tablet resting at a good angle for watching media. It’s as easy as possible, frankly. 
If using it as a power bank, just insert your charging cable into the XDream X-Power Plus, and the corresponding end to your smart device to begin the power transfer.
Performance
The XDream X-Power Plus performs adequately as a power bank, outputting 1A. Its 3000mAh capacity means that the battery will charge the Galaxy Note 5once before needing to be recharged itself. It isn’t the fastest charging power bank available but it does the job. Once depleted, the XDream X-Power Plus takes between 4-5 hours to recharge and is rated for at least 1,000 recharge cycles.
There are four LED lights — blue signifying that the XDream X-Power Plus is ready to use while the 3 white LED’s show the level of charge remaining. One white LED means less than 33% charge is remaining, two equals less than 66% and three white lights means that the charge level stands somewhere between 66-100%. Ifound that wasn’t an exact science by any means, and could be implemented better.
As a speaker, the XDream X-Power Plus has a full-range speaker on the opposite end of where the audio jack is, offering clarity as well as a good level of sound. Much like the BoomBox V2 that I reviewed a while back, the XDream X-Power Plus is great for listening to music while you are out and about, perhaps at picnics or BBQ’s. The XDream X-Power Plus isn’t loud enough to use for impromptu raves, and that’s not a bad thing. 
There’s up to 15 hours of playback on offer,which means it can last two days worth of my tinkering in the garage before needing a recharge.One of the things I would change with the XDream X-Power Plus is the need for a male-to-male USB cable when charging it. 
It just doesn’t fit in with the versatility of the device, and means that you need to carry an extra cable around. The second thing I would change is the way the charge level is indicated, three white lights should mean the device is fully charged, not between 66-100%. Aside from these nitpicks, I can see the XDream X-Power Plus being an ever-present device in my gadget bag.
Something to take note of if your charging port and audio jack are next to each other, as on the LG G3, is that I found I couldn’t charge the phone at the same time as playing music because the charging port becomes inaccessible. If you have a phone or tablet that has the audio jack on the top of the device though; there should be no problem whatsoever.

The XDream X-Power Plus is a unique device, combining duties as a power bank, portable speaker as well as a device stand. As a jack-of-all-trades, I would say it’s a great device to carry around, with each function being carried out well. Is it the fastest charger?No. The loudest speaker? No. But, bearing in mind that it’s a multi-purpose device, the XDream X-Power Plus offers a versatility that is difficult to match.
The XDream X-Power Plus can be had in a brushed aluminum finish, with either a blue, white, green, or orange accent. Usually, the XDream X-Power Plus goes for £49 from Wowzr, but it has been discounted to a much more reasonable £29 plus shipping. Those of you in the United States can pick up the device for between$39-$49 through Amazon.

Moto Maker will presumably be utilized once again to allow consumers to personalize their smartwatches.
Notice that the display size is different, too. This indicates that there will indeed be two unique models. Notice anything about the display? Well, it’s hard to tell if the ‘flat tire’ from last year’s Moto 360is returning.
Motorola will not be alone if they decide to announce anew smart watch this week. Plenty of companies are reportedly joining Huawei in showcasing new Android Wear devices at IFA 2015.

Some users of Instagram BETA for Windows Phone cannot refresh feeds

If you are still using the Instagram BETA app for Windows Phone that has not been updated since March 2014, you might be experiencing an issue where the app is not refreshing your feeds. 
A number of users of the app have sent in reports on this activity to Windows Central over the past few days, and it's also been reported on other outlets as well.
While there's no official word as to the cause of this problem, it's possible that Instagram's recent update to allow landscape and portrait images to be uploaded and viewed in its official iOS and Android apps might have something to do with it.
In any case, since Instagram has not bothered to update their official Windows Phone app in well over a year, we would highly suggest using a third-party app instead. Our favorite remains Rudy Huyn's6 tag, which just got updated to allow for uploading and viewing of Instagram's new image formats.

New photos offer up a look at the Android-powered BlackBerry Venice slider

While the rumors surrounding the BlackBerry 'Venice' slider continue to swirl, the device has now appeared once again in some new, clearer images which are pretty on par with everything we've seen thus far. 
As mentioned previously, there's still a lot of things up in the air surrounding this device and BlackBerry has yet to announce anything officially but judging from these images, the Venice is as was expected, running a customized version of Android Lollipop that brings along with it some BlackBerry 10influence.
Outside of showing off a bit of the presumably not yet complete hardware, there's not much else to go on here.
 The new images don't confirm any of the rumored specs outside of the camera, but for those interested, rumors are suggesting the Venice will be coming with a Snapdragon 808, 5.4-Inch display, 3GB of RAM and as we can see in the photos a 18MP rear shooter with the front facing shooter likely to be set at 5MP. That's about it for now, until the next set of leaks come up.

Why one well-intentioned Android Auto safety feature may drive users to their old ways

Android Auto probably is one of my favorite advancements of the past year. The idea of having an car stereo that doesn't make me want to let the car gently make its way over the cliffs of Escambia Bay on the way home is, indeed, a very good thing. A user interface that doesn't suck. 
The best mapping in the business. Access to all of my music. Voice commands. Podcasts. We've been going through all of the apps that are available for Android Auto, and so far it's (mostly) good.
But there's one issue — aside from weird connection issues some folks in our forums have been experiencing — that still has me scratching my head. It's a safety feature, actually — and one that may well do more harm than good.
One issue that's popped up in far too many apps is the cursed "For safety reasons, no more items can be displayed" screen. That's part of a safety feature (detailed here) that requires an action to be completed within six steps on Android Auto. That is, you can tap the screen no more than six times. 
(And Google says that rule is even more strict in Japan, where you get just four taps to get things done.)That six-tap maximum is a blessing and a curse. On one hand it keeps us from futzing with the display too much and (hopefully) forces us to rely more on voice commands, which ultimately keeps our eyes on the road and our hand off the phone. 
Nobody should question that intent. Putting the phone down while we're driving is one of the most important changes we need to see in the mobile space.Apps have to get creative to avoid the six-tap maximum. Or drivers could just unplug their phones and go back to their old ways.
And it's been interesting to see how app developers have handled it. Google Play Music on Android Auto at first seems fairly limited. You can't actually drill down by artist or album or category, which makes sense once you know about this six-tap maximum — you'd run into it very quickly. 
So, instead, you have to rely on voice commands, which works to varying degrees of success. (And that's assuming you know what you want to listen to in the first place.) I first found this tap limitation using Pocket Casts. I was subscribed to a bunch of podcasts, with the most recently added at the bottom of the list — with their episodes seven taps away, and thus out of reach.
 The "Unplayed episodes" category helped with that some, but that also meant glancing through all of the unplayed listings instead of being able to go straight to a specific show. 
But ultimately I changed my habits and unsubscribed from the shows I don't regularly listen to.So should developers be forced to neuter their apps for fewer taps? Or users changethe way they use the apps? I fear it might not matter anyway.One of the requirements for an Android Auto experience is a Bluetooth connectionfor phone calls. (Android Auto uses USB for audio.) And if you've got a Bluetooth-capable car stereo, you're halfway to a decent hands-free experience in the first place. But a Bluetooth connection doesn't actually do anything to keep the phone outof your hand. 
Android Auto effectively (but,no, not completely) locks you out of the phone while it's in use, overlaying the"Android Auto" logo on a black screen, so long as the phone is plugged in. A standard Bluetooth connection, however, still lets you pick up and use the phone like normal.
So what's to stop a user frustrated with the six-tap limitation, lack of artist/album browsing or sub-par apps from simply unplugging from Android Auto, connecting via Bluetooth and negating the safer user interface?The last thing Android Auto (or Apple'sCarPlay, which to me is just as important) needs to do is drive drivers back to their old ways, with phone in hand. 
The good news is we're still in the early days, and I believe Google's going about things the right way, relying on handset software rather than in-car firmware for updates. And in any event the responsibility still lies on those of us behind the wheel.

As expected, the Note 5 wins this one.
The Galaxy Note 5received more than double the amount of votes in our unscientific poll compared to the S6 edge+. Everyone saw this coming. Even with availability in Europe a puzzling unknown(they gotta eventually sell it to the EU's millions and millions of Android consumers, right?) 
Samsung and seemingly everyone else has pushed the Note 5 as the premier Galaxy phone of 2015. Insert anecdotes about backwards pens, removable batteries and SD cards here. 
Of course, the requisite "No. Not buying" column gathered the most votes of any single choice with 42 percent. I have to include an option for the people not interested to have a voice, too. But still — this means 58 percent of the people voting grabbed one or the other.
Naturally, this doesn't count the hundreds of millions of Android users who didn't vote at all. Slackers, each and every one of them. I kid. Maybe. 
What I really wanna know is who the 253 people who got both are. Holler in the comments if you're one of them.

According to a recent tweet from Evan Blass, HTC’s upcoming flagship smartphone will be known as theHTC One A9.
 According to recent reports, the A in A9 stands for Aero. The new flagship will likely hit the market in late 2015 or early 2016 and will likely be the first ever smartphone to be powered by a deca-core processor.
The HTC One M9 rumors are beginning to heat up. We’re expecting the flagship to include a Quad HD (1440 x 2560 pixels) display, a first of its kind deca-core MediaTek Helio X20 processor backed with 4GB of RAM and an improved rear-facing camera with support for RAW photography.
We’re expecting the HTC One A9 to launch on AT&T and be priced between $500 – $600 off contract. We should find out more in the coming months.

Sony Xperia Z5 surfaces in video

Spoiler alert! A video has surfaced on the web and revealed the upcoming Sony Xperia Z5 in its full glory. Sony plans to hold its press event this Wednesday at IFA 2015. We are expecting to see multiple variants of the Z5 announced including premium and compact versions.
The Sony Xperia Z5 premium will be the successor to the Xperia Z4 or Z3+ depending on where you live. The flagship will include a 5.5-inch display with a rumored 4k resolution. We’re also expecting to see a bump in the camera department up to 23MP for the rear-facing, as well as a better selfie cam. 
It will likely offer the same water and dust proofing capabilities and will have some serious power under the hood. We’re talking about the Snapdragon 810 SoC, the Adreno 430 GPU and either 3 or 4GB of RAM. 
Hopefully Sony will take care of the heating issues with the Snapdragon 810. We’ll let you know all the details as they arrive on Wednesday, but for now, check out the embed video below for a close uplook at the upcoming flagship.

Only two weeks ago the Gionee GN9007passed through the TENAA. A new report states the upcoming smartphone will be known as the Gionee S5.1 Pro.
The Gionee S5.1 Pro will feature a totally new design very unlike that of the Gionee S5.1. The smartphone willinclude mid-range specifications and will likely be announced in the coming months if not weeks. 
It will feature an ultra thin body of only 6.45mm and support 4G LTE connectivity with dual SIM capabilities. Pricing should land in the $300 -$400 range.

It’s possible to experience at least one facet of Apple’s new service on Android, that being the Beats 1 radio station that features a never-ending broadcast of music — new and old — hosted by famous DJs such as Zane Lowe and even artists like Drake and Pharrell.

15 Gmail tips & tricks everyone should know

As we’ve learned in the past, Gmail is by far the most popular email app among Android users. There are tons of apps that can be used with Gmail, but the official app from Google is the best. It has all the features that power users need, but yet is easy enough for casual users. The official Gmail app is packed with features and tricks (some more obvious that others). We’ve got 15 tips to help you get the most out of the Gmail app.
1. Search smarter with advanced operators 
One of the best features of Gmail has always been search. You can easily find emails by typing in the sender’s address, subjects, or even just words you know appear in the body. Search is pretty great already,but you can make it even better. By using advanced search operators you can narrow the search even more. 
Here’s an example of finding an email you sent about football tickets within the last week. Simply type this into the search bar:
tickets,in:sent,newer_than:7d
“Tickets” is your search term, “in:” tells Gmail where to look, and “newer_than:” tell Gmail how far to look back. Those are just a couple examples of the many operators you can use. Google has a full list of operators here.
Not every single one works in the Gmail mobile app, but the majority of them work great.
2. Add non-Gmail accounts to the Gmail app 
The Gmail app works best with, you guessed it, Gmail accounts, but it can actually do more than that. You can use other email accounts, such as Yahoo or Outlook, right inside the familiar Gmail app. Gmail’s great search features still work with other email accounts. If you have non-Gmail email accounts it’s really easy to add them. 
Open Gmail 
Swipe in from the left to open the menu 
Touch the down arrow icon to the right of your name 
TapAdd account 
To add a non-Gmail account tap 
Personal (IMAP/POP)Follow the steps on the screen 
To quickly switch between accounts swipe in from the left to show the menu and tap on the profile icon you’d like to use.
3. See all your accounts in one stream 
Now that you have all your accounts in one app you can merge the inboxes to see all of your emails in one stream. Once you have multiple accounts, Gmail or otherwise, added to the app you should see “All inboxes” show up in the menu. Simply tap on it to see all of your emails in one stream. To switch back to an individual account tap on “Inbox” or tap on the profile icon you’d like to see.
4. Archive or Delete an email from the notifications 
When you get an email with the Gmail app there are a couple of quick actions you can take from the notifications. If the notification isn’t already expanded simply pull down on it with two fingers, you should see the option to Archive or Reply to the email. Archiving an email removes it from your inbox, but doesn’t totally getrid of it. If you’d rather delete the email entirely you can change the quick action.

5. Swipe away emails with a gesture

6. Tap sender profile image to select multiple emails 
Another good way to keep an inbox clean is by taking action on multiple emails at once. You can do things like Archive, Delete, Mark as read, and change labels to a bunch of emails at once. It’s easy to do.

You’ll see some options appear at the top of the screen, and now you can tap other profile icons to select them
7. Mute those annoying conversations you don’t care about 
Are you tired of getting notified about certain email conversations? In the Gmail app you can mute conversations to have all new messages archived (while still remaining unread). 
Then you can read them later without being pestered with notifications.

8. Avoid the “Oh crap!” moments 
We’ve all had those moments where we accidentally delete an important email, or send an email we wish we could take back. Most of these mistakes could have been avoided if someone would have said “are you sure?” You might not have an assistant watching over your email at all times, but with Gmail you don’t need that.

9. Save time by auto-advancing to the next email 
If you have to go through a lot of emails every day you should be using a feature called “Auto-advance.” This feature determines what happens after you archive or delete a message. It can automatically take you to the next newer or older email, or jump you back to the conversation list. Depending on which way you move through your inbox, you’ll want the newer or older option.

10. Train your inbox to organize email for you 
A good inbox is one that sorts email for you. Gmail has this functionality built-in, but it requires a little work on your part. Gmail will learn how to organize email over time, but only if you set a good example. You can do this by moving emails to the Priority Inbox, regular Inbox, and Spam.

11. See more by disabling sender profile images 
The profile icons in the Gmail app can make things lookpretty, but most of the time they just show up as a colored circle with a letter inside. They don’t make the best use of valuable screen real estate. Why not turn them off completely? This will allow you to see more of an email before opening it up.

12. Take a vacation and set an automated response

13. Insert files directly from Google Drive 
Since Gmail is a Google product you would expect great integration with other Google products, and you would be right. Gmail works especially well with Google Drive. Sending attachments can be a huge pain, but with Google Drive integration it’s much easier. You can attach files from your Drive with the Gmail app.

14. Save attachments directly to Google Drive

15. Send a Hangouts message or video chat from an email 
Another way Gmail integrates with other Google products is Hangouts and Google+. If you recieve an email from someone with a Google account there is a good chance you can send them a message on Hangouts or do a video call with them right from the Gmail app.

Student gets caught trying to sell Android malware online, faces up to 10 years in prison

A student from Carnegie Mellon University could face prison time after admitting to a federal court judge that he was responsible for creating Android malware. Thanks, *sshole.
20 year old Morgan C. Culbertson pleaded guilty to “conspiracy to damage protected computers” and is one of 3 men responsible for building an app called Dendroid.
 He told U.S. District Judge Maurice Cohill Jr. he planned to sell in an online marketplace called Darkode for about $300 to other douche bags who enjoy that sorta thing.
Your typical Android malware, once installed, Dendroid spies on text message conversations, takes photos, and even records phone conversations — all unbeknownst to the user (of course). 
Culbertson admits that he attempted to sell the source code online, but he reportedly didn’t receive any offers.
Culbertson, who says he’s sorry and will use his “skills” to protect computer users, now faces up to 10 years in prison, although it’s highly unlikely he’ll receive anywhere near the maximum.
 He’s currently free on a$10,000 bond with sentencing scheduled for December.[Post-Gazette]

WhatsApp for Windows Phone users received yet another update, which is actually the second one for the popular messaging app this week. 
The new version number is 2.12.126.0. However, the app still doesn't come with an updated change log, which likely means it's a minor update for bug fixes and unnamed improvements.

Windows 10 Mobile build 10534 screenshots are leaked on the Internet

While we wait for Microsoft to release a new build of Windows 10 Mobile for members of the Windows Insider program,a site has posted what it says are leaked screenshots of a new version of the OS, with the build number 10534.
The images come from Poland-based Windows mania.pl but the images show very little that's new in this build compared to earlier versions. The site does claim that build 10532 does run faster than the current Windows Insider version of build 10512. 
It also notes a new option for USB over ethernet, along with some SIM improvements. Microsoft Windows Insider leader Gabriel Aul noted earlier this week that he was testing build 10532 but that doesn't mean this will be the version that will be offered to members of the Insider program, nor this new build with the leaked screenshots.

Hands on with People Edge on the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge+

When Samsung unveiled their new Galaxy S6 Edge+, they also brought with it one new feature that it’s smaller sibling doesn’t have. 
That new feature is App Edge, which is an expansion on People Edge.Like the old People Edge feature, you can swipe from the top right or left of the edge screen (depending on what you picked in the settings) and out will slide a menu. 
This will show you your top 5 favorite friends and will let you call or text them directly. Any contacts can be added and colors can be changed for each one. The new App Edge is exactly the same, only with apps. To open it, open People Edge and swipe one more time.
 The menu will now show your favorite apps. Select your favorite top 5 apps and you now have quick access to them no matter where you are on your device.
While this feature is definitely wanted by many, it’s not as good as Glovebox. I have written a full guide on how amazing Glovebox is and why I love it on my S6 Edge. It does basically the same thing, but can also add widgets, more apps, folders, almost anything you would like. 
Plus, it works on any Android device. However, for those of you who don’t want to install any additional apps, App Edge is a great new feature.

Google updates mobile app search design

Google is updating how searching for apps on mobile will look. If you search for virtually any app and add the word “app”, at the end, you will get to see this new grid layout above the normal layout. 
The color of the box is determined by the app’s icon. If you click “More apps”, more apps will flow down.This can be done in the Google Now search bar or you can say “Ok Google, camera apps”, and a list of apps will appear like in the picture. 
When I tried it, it showed me just one camera app, but once I expanded to show more it looked like the grid picture above.Right now this is only for Android phones and does not work for Google Search on iOS just yet or possibly ever.

Amid widespread diversity complaints in the tech sector, Twitter claims it will do better in 2016

A huge topic in the tech world the past few years is the staggeringly low percentages of women and minorities employed in these sectors. 
A few companies have committed themselves to addressing this issue and, now,Twitter joins them.In a blog post today, Twitter Vice President of Diversity and Inclusion Janet Van Huysse, wrote that Twitter intends to perform better in 2016 with its hiring standards and retention of female and minority prospects. 
This is done in a move that she claims will commit Twitter to having a more diverse workplace that is representative of the diversity present in the company’s consumers.
We considered simply setting company-wide hiring goals, but we don’t want to stop at that. If our aim is to build a company we can really be proud of — one that’s more inclusive and diverse — we need to make sure it’s a great place for both new and current employees to work and to grow. 
That’s why these new goals focus on increasing the overall representation of women and underrepresented minorities throughout the whole company. Van Huysse hopes to increase the overall percentage of women employed by Twitter to 35% and hopefully get to25% for women in leadership roles inside of the social media company by the end of 2016.
And if they don’t reach these goals? Van Huysse wants you to call them out. “We’re holding ourselves accountable to these measurable goals, as should you.

On September 1st, you will no longer see advertisements utilizing Flash. This doesn’t mean that you won’t see video-like advertisements anymore, just they will all be HTML5.
Google’sAdWords division states that this change will speed up browser performance and bring all advertisers in line with the new HTML5 standard.There is already a setting in Chrome that allows you to disable these Flash advertisement plugins, but on September 1st, Google will switch this to “On” as defaultin the Chrome browser.
If you’re an advertiser, Google has already attempted toconvert your Flash advertisement toHTML5, but there is a chance that it was unsuccessful in doing this. If it was unsuccessful, then your advertisement will be disabled and you will need to do the converting yourself.
Google had the following to say about the changes:Video and interactive media bring consumers rich, engaging experiences on the web–but they can also impact browser speed and battery life. A few months ago, Chrome introduced a setting (https://goo.gl/cBhea4) designed to increase page-load speed and reduce power consumption by pausing certain plugin content, including many Flash ads.
 As soon as September (http://goo.gl/u5f019), this setting will be turned on by default so Chrome users can enjoy faster performance and view more content before charging their batteries.

Social network Vine has announced some upgrades to their service that focus on the music. The new features will impact how content creators as well as consumers experience the service. 
Vine is adding a new “Snap to Beat” option for users who want to add some music their video clips and some new features for users to discover popular music on the network.
The Snap to Beat feature is designed to help creators come up with a “perfect loop” or “seamless loop.” These are Vines that seem to have never-ending music loops where a user is unable to tell where the loop begins and where it ends. 
Until now, this took some work on the part of a content creator to get it just right. With Snap to Beat, users can tap the music note when uploading a video to select a song. Snap to Beat will analyze the song, find a section that will work for a perfect loop, and then trim your video to match the audio clip.
 Users who want to maintain manual control over the process can turn off Snap to Beat.In addition to Snap to Beat, Vine has created a new Featured Tracks section for users to access when looking for music to add to a Vine. Again, by tapping on the music note to add a song, users will be presented with a list of Featured Tracks or they can check out recently added songs.
Vine is also helping content consumers by making it easier to figure out what songs are playing when clips are being viewed. Vine notes the “Song?” question is one of the most frequently posted comments on Vines, so they built in the answer in the app. When viewing a Vine, if the music note is present, viewers can tap on that to get information about the song.
Vine also worked with Billboard to get Vine added to the Billboard Social 50 chart to help “surface” music that is popular on Vine to wider audiences.The new music discovery features are available starting today on both Android and iOS.

New York City cabs will start using Arroto compete with Uber

Uber has been rapidly growing, and taxi cabs in major cities have struggled to figure out how to stay competitive. New York City cab drivers are beta testing a new app called Arro that will work pretty similarly to Uber, but it favors traditional cab drivers.
The app tracks your name and location and sends your info to nearby cab drivers when you open it, directing the driver to pick you up. It also saves your credit card info, so it can pay your cab fare, too.
The app is currently being beta tested by about 7000 cab drivers, but it’s expected to see a full rollout in a couple weeks. It’s launching in New York City, but the company wants to expand to many other major cities, too.
If nothing else, it’s good to see Uber get some competition.

How to Use Your Child Theme on Another WordPress Site

Getting Started

Child themes are completely portable, and you can use it on as many sites as you like. You can download them and install them on another WordPress site. You can even submit your child theme to the WordPress theme directory for others to use if it meets certain standards.
Before moving your child theme, you may want to take a look at our checklist of things you must do before changing your WordPress theme, and how to properly switch WordPress themes. These articles will give you a general idea about theme-specific settings that you need to look out for.
Last but most importantly, make sure that you have complete WordPress backup of both your sites before performing any actions. 
Moving a WordPress Child Theme 
First thing you need to do is connect to your website using an FTP client and browse to the /wp-content/themes directory. Next, download both your child theme and parent the me folders to your computer.
The next step is to connect to the WordPress site where you want to install your child theme using the FTP client. Browse to the/wp-content/themes/directory and then upload both child and parent theme folders you downloaded earlier to the new site.
Now login to theadmin area of the site where you want to install the child theme and visit Appearance » Themes. You will be able to see both parent and child themes installed there.
Click on the live preview button under the child theme to make sure everything is working as expected. Once you are satisfied, you can safely activate the child theme on your new WordPress site.
