The world’s first penis transplant surgery has been 100% successful.
The surgeon at the Tygerberg Hospital, Cape Town, South Africa who carried out the transplant, Andre van der Merwe, confirmed that the 21-year old subject had impregnated his girlfriend.
Dr Van der Merwe said: “This is what we intended, that he should be able to stand up and be able to urinate and have intercourse, so it is a milestone for him.”
He had not expected the man to be infertile, as he had an issue with his penis, not his testicles, the surgeon added.
