Next Version of Google Hangouts Might Eliminate SMS/MMS Messages Feature [Rumor]

While many of us don't use Google Hangouts as their SMS/MMS messaging app of choice, there are still agreat number of folks out there who do. If the latest rumor is true, those who use Hangouts for text messaging could be in for a rude surprise.
The intel suggests that Google will remove the (carrier/native) SMS/MMS features from Google Hangouts in the next update to the app. This would mean that Google will officially separate that functionality into Hangouts and the Google Messenger App. 
The good news about that is that Messenger is actually a well rounded and is a more fleshed out SMS/texting app, so it shouldn't be toodifficult of a transition for most folks.Here at HQ, most of us already use Messenger separate from Hangouts anyway. How about you folks?

Hacker King George Hotz Is Working On A DIY Self Driving Car!

This may be a bit of subject, but was too cool to not talk aboutit! George Hotz otherwise known as"GeoHotz" or the father of jailbreakingis pretty well known in the hacking community. 
Many Android fans know him as the guy that swooped in and claimed the $20k bounty for the Galaxy S5 root. Many other hackers and security experts had worked on the S5 before calling the task of rooting it impossible. 
Others may know him for his work jailbreakingthe PS3 after Sony sent out an update removing the feature which allowed users to run Linux on the system.Hotz has put the black hat hacking behind him in favor of working for big tech companies. He has bounced from jobto job all of which were just not intellectually satisfying for him. He turned down a multimillion dollar deal from Elon Muskto work on Tesla's Autopilot system. 
He has decided to create his own self driving car system. He calls it Comma ai and it will be a direct competitor to Mobileye which powers Tesla's autopilot system. 
This is based on the Acura ILX Sedan. It's currently a month or so in the making and already kind of works. 
Hotz says that it is different in that it learns from human drivers and mimics natural driving rather than being programmed to a set of predetermined rules.
 To train his system he will be driving Uber for the next month or so. Eventually Hotz hopes to sell his system to automakers or to consumers directly asan aftermarket kit for about $1,000.

When Google first launched their awesome Nexus Protect "insurance" for warranty repairs and accidents with Nexus devices, the only way you could get it was through the Google Play Store. 
This left folks who were early adopters of Google's Project Fi MVNO cellular service stuck without a protection plan on devices purchased through that service. Luckily they have seen the error of their ways on this oversight.
You can now purchase the Nexus Protect accidental protection plan directly on the Project Fi website when you get a device there. Here's a quote with the details,"That has now changed with Project Fi buyers having the chance to purchase the Nexus Protect plan.
 When purchased via Project Fi buyers get coverage against accidental damage suchas broken screens and mechanical breakdown for $5 per month.Nexus 6P buyers will pay a $99 deductible for repairs or replacements. Nexus 5X owners will need to cough up$69 if they break the device.

The Huawei P9, tipped to feature a fingerprint sensor and 5.2-inch display, could be on sale in less than six months, one source suggests.
A report arriving courtesy ofMobile-Dadclaims that Huawei intends to launch the P9smartphone in March 2016, almost a year after the premium-feeling P8 made its way onto the market.
Discussing specs, the mobile tech website says the Huawei P9,codenamed IP03, will arrive with a 5.2-inch display, this time boasting a ‘curved design’. The report notes that the resolution of the screen remains a mystery, although the gadget is apparently powered by Huawei’s own octa-core Kirin 950 processor.
 A fingerprint sensor is simply mentioned as a ‘possibility’.Under the hood of the P9 will be 4GB of RAM, addsMobile-Dad, along with a dual rear-facing camera sporting laser auto focus technology. Back in October, one Twitter user claimed to share animage suggesting Huawei’s P9 would rock a dual rear camera.
Just last month, aWeibo sourcealso shared some news of the Huawei P9, adding that the phone will drop equipped with Android 6.0 Marshmallow. The same source leaked news of the Xiaomi Mi 5, which still remainsunder wraps.Meanwhile, there are suggestions that the P9 will be accompanied by a larger Brother,the Huawei P9 Max. Rumoured to arrive with a 6.2-inch Quad HD screen, the gadget ‘could also be introduced some time next year’.

This method was used to punish thieves and those accused of adultery. Some or all the vital organs were removed one by one from the body, mainly from the abdomen. Sources say it was practiced in England, the Netherlands, Belgium and in Japan.
6. Impalement

If you was the Dracula of 15th century Romania, you simply impaled your victims by forcing them to sit on a sharp and thick pole. The pole was then raised upright and the victim was left to slide further down the pole by his or her own weight. This was among the most revolting of punishments ever imagined and practiced by humans. It was a favorite of the Romans, Chinese, Greeks and the Turks. It was also practiced in Asia and in Europe during the Middle Ages.
One of the most horrifying methods of execution. The victim was pierced through the rectum, through the vagina, through the side or even through the mouth, causing deep bleeding and painful wounds. They were then dropped into their own grave. The victim endured a long period of continued suffering before their death. Though it was rarely practiced, but was truly horrifying.
5. Crushing

Death by crushing or pressing is a forceful execution method that has an extensive history, with several varying methods used through time. One of them was ‘Crushing by Elephants’, which was used throughout south and south-east Asia for over 4,000 years. Sources say it was also used by Romans as well as by the Nguyen Dynasty in Vietnam. 
The condemned would be tied up with his head on a stone or a slightly extruded surface. The head was crushed by a highly trained elephant, who would slowly exert pressure on the head. The condemned would feel all the horrors of his frightful death before taking his last breath. In another method, the victim was pressed with extremely large and heavy stones laid upon their chest, causing suffocation and then death.
4. Death by Burning

Another gruesome method of execution mainly practiced in Rome, in Akragas in Sicily, in England, and in some part of North America too. As the title explains what the punishment is all about but one thing to know is that the burning wasn’t just haphazard. The condemned’s body would burn progressively in the following sequence: calves, thighs and hands, torso and forearms, breasts, upper chest, face; and then finally death. It was extremely painful, although sometimes the person died from carbon monoxide poisoning before the fire even touched their calves. Pitch was also applied to the person’s body, which helped the fire to burn quicker and make the process faster.
3. Death by Sawing

Death by sawing was a method of execution reportedly used in different parts of the world, for example in Europe under the Roman Empire, in Spain, and in parts of Asia. Using this method, the condemned would usually be hung upside down with the legs apart. The saw would then slowly be driven through the entire body, eventually cutting the head in two. The person condemned usually wouldn’t die until the saw reached the head.
2. Hanged, Drawn and Quartered

Used mainly in England, it is widely considered to be one of the most brutal execution methods ever devised. As the name implies it came in three parts. Convicts were fastened to a hurdle, or wooden panel, and drawn by horse to the place of execution, where they were hanged (almost to the point of death), emasculated, disembowelled, beheaded and quartered (chopped into four pieces). Their remains were often displayed in prominent places across the country, such as London Bridge. For reasons of public decency, women convicted of high treason were instead burnt at the stake. This punishment was only used on men for any convicted woman would generally be burnt at the stake as a matter of decency.
1. Slow Slicing (Lingchi)

Also known as the “lingering death”, or “death by a thousand cuts” and in China as Lingchi, was a common method for executing criminals back in the 900 AD and was usually practiced in China. In this form of execution, a knife was used to methodically remove portions of the body over an extended period of time, eventually leading to their death. Lingchi was reserved for crimes viewed as especially severe, such as treason, mass murder, patricide or the murder of one’s master or employer. Emperors used it to threaten people and sometimes ordered it for minor offenses. Some emperors meted out this punishment to the family members of their enemies.

While most people are patiently waiting andwatching for Android 6.0 Marshmallow to be available for their smartphones, not much noise has been generated by tablet owners who no doubt look forward to the sweet update.
 NVIDIA appears to be ready to become one of the first manufacturers to get Android 6.0 Marshmallow out to their tablets thanks to an update for the NVIDIA SHIELD tablet K1. If NVIDIA gets the update out soon enough, and they should be close based on a video they released yesterday, they should only be trailing Google’s own Nexus line of tablets.
The YouTube posting indicates NVIDIA plans to roll out the update for the NVIDIA SHIELD tablet K1 in December. NVIDIA shows several features of Android 6.0 Marshmallow running on the tablet device, like the scrolling app screen with search, controlling app permissions, Google Now on Tap, and using an SD card for internal memory purposes.

This is the flagship to go for if you want a removable battery and expandable storage but it's a shame to see features like wireless charging dropped. *.Samsung's Galaxy S6 is the best Android phone of 2015 so far, although we've yet to see what's to come from the LG G4 and Sony Xperia Z4. It's fast, it's well built, it has a gorgeous screen and the software isn't overly intrusive. The fingerprint scanner is vastly improved, the heart-rate scanner a potential draw for some users, and the wireless- and fast charging welcome inclusions. 
We'd like to see the pricecome down (which we are sure it will) and it's a shame we've lost the removable battery, waterproofing and microSD support, but these are all things we can live with.

Google adds data-only support to Project Fi, Apple tablets included

When Googlelaunchedthe service, Project Fi supported just one phone. Project Fi started with the Nexus 6 alone beforereplacing that support with the Nexus 6P and Nexus 5X. 
A whopping two devices, no matter how current they are, isn’t exactly a winning strategy. Google needs to allow more devices to join its service that is backedby T-Mobile and Sprint networks. 
Today, the company announced that data-only devices will be admitted to the service without any monthly device fee.Project Fi customers can use a data-only device for $10 for 1GB per month. 
Staying true to the service’s premise, Google is charging for exactly what is used. Don’t need all of that data? google will credit you for what’s left at the end of each month.These are the compatible devices named by Google:

Netflix update uses less data and makes everything look better

Everyone’s favorite video streaming app, Netflix, is soon to get a lot better. Not only will it look much better, it will also use less data. It has done this by re-encoding its entire library to compress files in a more intelligent way.
One of the ways it has done this is by looking at what device you are watching Netflix from, combined with your connection speed, and determines the best possible stream to send you.
Before, if you used a slow connection, Netflix would simply send you a low-res video feed. However, now it will send you a higher quality feed with a lower bitrate. Thisresults in a higher resolution looking image, but maintains a lower file size.
To see this, the first image is a 1080p cropped image of Netflix’s BoJack Horseman, and the second image is of the new lower bitrate version. The new version looks much crisper than before, and got rid of any extra artifacts.
For cartoons, this means they will always look better, but for faster moving media, it will still show you lower resolution video to maintain a higher bitrate needed for the fast-movement.
However, this will vary depending on the video you are watching. Shows like Orange is the New Blackwill be shown at a higher resolution and lower bitrate, however, no significant quality improvement will be seen. This will still result in the same high quality image, but save bandwidth due to the lower bitrate.
Netflix says the new encoding can save up to20% less bandwidth than currently. This is pretty huge considering Netflix uses some of the most data out of any app or service. I’m definitely excited to see better looking images and save data, what about you?

Smartphone battery life is a constant problem
There is little question that smartphonecomputing power improves with each passing week. Faster processors and more RAM seems to be the norm, but at the same time, strides with battery life just don’t get made that often.
Battery life is one of the biggest selling points for new phones from iPhones to anything running Android. 15 hours would be lovely for most owners of thosephones but 15 days is, quite frankly unheard of in the market.
That could all change as the Chinese-based Oukitel is promising that its K10000 smartphone will work for 10 to 15 days on a single charge. Now, surely you won’t be able to stream Netflix movies and other programming for 10 days straight but the new Android-powered K10000 is raising some eyebrows in the tech media.
Not surprisingly, the Oukitel K10000 battery is the key to its battery life
The battery in the K10000, fittingly, is a mega-sized 10,000 mAh batter that is a monster. But in addition to this “over-sized” battery is the presence of a number of components that can only be called mid-range and certainly not the cutting edge components used by Samsung, HTC, Apple and others especially in their flagship offerings.
The new smartphone from Oikitel is powered by a mere 1Ghz quad-core processor from MediaTek. The processor is paired with 2GB of supporting RAM. For a phone boasting the K10000’s battery life, it’s somewhat surprising that it boasts a 5.5-inch display.
That said, its 720p resolution is not going to impress many who have enjoyed the newest version of the iPhone or Galaxy. Such is equally the case with two very average cameras that are built into the K10000.
The front-facing camera is 2-megapixels while the rear camera has eight. The 16GBs of internal storage is augmented by microSD support and the phone is runs Android Lollipop. Another surprise given its huge battery and large screen is the fact that the K10000 weighs less than an iPhone 6s Plus at 184 grams.
Pre-orders are being taken nowThe Oukitel is a work horse but by no means is it a thoroughbred. Online retailer GearBest is taking orders for the K10000 for a very reasonable$239.99 unlocked without a contract. Orders will begin shipping on January 21, 2016.

Oukitel Claims Their New K10000 Android Smartphone Will Have 10-15 Day Battery Life

Prepare to be blown away with a ridiculous smartphone battery life claim. A small Chinese company called Oukitel just announced their latest smartphone project called the K10000.
According to their release info, the phone's biggest claim to fame is that its battery will supposedly last 10-15 days with a single charge. Feel free to re-read that sentence again... it is not atypo. 
That is 10-15days, not hours.It seems like the company decided to name the phone after its battery, because it is a massive 10,000 mAh model. 
What's really surprising is that the size of the phone isn't too ridiculous considering the size of the battery. The phone is quite large and thick, but it's not too crazy considering. Here are the rest of the specs outlined by the company:

After seeing these specs, the picture becomes a bit clearer. The MediaTek processor probably barely sips the juice. Also, the 5.5-inch display isn't even Full HD at just 720p resolution. Still, considering this thing supposedly only weighs 184 grams, it is still an impressive accomplishment if true.

Weekly Poll Followup: Android tablets win bya landslide

Last week weaskedwhich type of tablet was your favorite. Just about everyone has used one at this point, and most of us have at least one floating around our homes. 
There is definitely some variety in the type of tablets currently on the market with options like the MicrosoftSurface, AppleiPad, and plenty of Android tablets to boot. It's quite apparent that Android tablets are currently the most popular though.
There were four options in last week's poll. Android tablets, iPad and iPad Mini, Surface tablets, orother Windows tablets. Out of these Android certainly has the largest variety of tablets available for you to play with, which is why it's unsurprising that they won outthis week's poll with a whopping 64% of the overall vote.
So Android were the clear winner for the poll this week, and had 4,581 votes in their favor. Apple tablets came in second place with 20 percent of the vote, and 1,431 individual vote. In third place was the Surface tablet with 859 votes and 12 percent of the vote.
 In last place were other Windows tablets who managed to grab up just 214 votes at 3 percent of all votes. While it really wasn't surprising tosee Android come in first place, the fact that they had more than twice the number of votes of any other category is a bit telling.

HTC One X9 images with leaked online, could launch in 2016

Photos of the rumored HTC One X9 have leaked onlinejust a month after passing through China’s TENAA certification. HTC might have hoped the One A9 would turn itssinking ship around, but it seems like HTC might have another flagship to introduce soon.
This new report is saying that we could we see the new handset from HTC sometime in 2016. Initial rumors indicate that the devicewill sport a 2.2GHz octa-core processor, 2GB of RAM, 16GB of internal storage, microSD support, and a 13-megapixel rear camera. 
The disappointing aspect is that it’llcome with Android 5.0.2 right out of the box and not Marshmallow as the One A9 had come with. Of course, these are rumors, and it’s much too early to start call anythingofficial by any means.
Unfortunately, these leaked images don’t really give anything special away about this device. Interestingly, these images do show off theOne X9’s alleged camera visor–similar to that of the Nexus 6P–that was rumored a little over a month ago.

When Google announced they were opening a preview version of the next overhaul to their Google+ social media platform, they quickly found themselves inundated with negative feedback concerning both the design and the lack of features. Despite the criticism, the developers have continued to work on improving the new version. Their latest efforts were released on Friday.The updates to the web preview include the following changes:*.Links to categories in Communities now appear in the side panel so users can quickly navigate to them;*.Animated GIFs will now auto-play, although a setting was added to turn that on or off depending on the user’s preference;*.Posts in Collections can now be pinned to the top;*.The notification indicator has been changed to a white circle with black textinstead of the red circle with white text that was getting lost in the top bar;*.A new pop-up warning will appear if a user starts to navigate away from a pagewhile a new post is still being drafted to verify whether they want to discard changes.Google staff indicated the changes were based on feedback they have been receiving. In some cases the feedback was unanimous, like with the display of Community categories. The Motorola DROID Turbo 2 -- Verizon's latest darling -- seems to be getting a soak test. As with most cases we're not yet sure what this soak test will bring as it hasn't started rolling out yet, with the only details being that it's a chance for users to get an "early preview of a new software release."
So, what is it? Marshmallow is always the optimistic and exciting guess, and with Motorola's emphasis on fast updates as of late we wouldn't put it past them. But it's just as likely that this could be a minor upgrade for a different purpose, such as performance improvements or the installation of Verizon's newly-launched WiFi calling.
But we won't know exactly what's what until the updates start rolling out. If you're a DROID Turbo 2 owner and part of the Motorola Feedback Network then stay on the lookout for your invite and impending OTA. Fingers crossed that it's the sweet treat we're all hoping it to be!

First Impressions and User Interface
Ghost’s dashboard is very straight-forward and easy to understand. After you log in, the first thing you see is your most recent content (if you just installed it, the demo content is included with ghost. The menu has 3 options in it, Content, New Post and Settings. This makes you feel instantly prepared to go ahead and write your first post.

WordPress’s dashboard has a lot more options, and might be a little more intimidating for new users. You can still easily navigate your way to creating new posts, editing content and other things, but the interface is not as clean.

Overall Ghost’s dashboard looks slightly cleaner, and might be easier for complete beginners to get used to (except for maybe the markdown writing method) than WordPress’s, while WordPress offers more options and flexibility.

There is, however, little in way of beginner-friendly improvements to be made to loading speed after that point. But with WordPress, there are a lot of plugins that can help you out in this area. When you add a caching plugins like <a href="http://www.wpbeginner.com/plugins/how-to-install-and-setup-w3-total-cache-for-beginners/">W3 Total Cache</a>, WordPress ends up with the speed advantage.

Being the veteran and more popular choice, obviously WordPress has a larger and more established community. This means that not only can you do just about anything you want with WordPress, someone else have already done it, and written a tutorial about it (hint: WPBeginner). It’s also very easy to get personal help solving WordPress related problems from other WordPress users, simply because there’s so many of them.
Comparatively speaking Ghost has a smaller community and support forums. There are dedicated users that help answer questions and write some relevant guides, but there’s not the same cloud of guides, tips and ideas that you have out there for WordPress.

Design and Layout Options
The default themes for WordPress and Ghost are not too different. Simple, functional, and beautiful.
Outside of that, WordPress has a lot more variety to offer than Ghost in this department. A simple byproduct of there being a lot more WordPress themes than Ghost themes available.
A great thing about a lot of WordPress themes is that you can have a surprising degree of creative control over the design of your site, without having to hard-code anything. From within the theme customizer, you can often change color schemes, backgrounds, fonts, container sizes and other things, small and big.

On top of that, there are many drag-and-drop themes and plugins for WordPress that you can use to easily create different kinds of pages, from portfolio to about, to landing pages. For Ghost, you have limited options as it is very blog-centric.
With Ghost, there are options for the code-savvy to customize themes, but if you don’t understand code at all, then your options are limited.

Flexibility
One of the main selling point of WordPress is it’s flexibility. It’s an open-source piece of software you can use to easily create almost any website.
You have literally thousands of themes and plugins to choose from. If you need some functionality that default WordPress doesn’t offer, there’s almost certainly a plugin for that. <a href="http://www.wpbeginner.com/plugins/how-to-put-your-wordpress-site-in-maintenance-mode/">Maintenance mode</a>, <a href="http://www.wpbeginner.com/plugins/which-is-the-best-wordpress-photo-gallery-plugin-performance-quality-compared/">animated galleries</a>, even completely functional online stores. But with Ghost, things are a little different. The team behind it designed it specifically for blogging, and only blogging.
While there are Ghost themes, and some apps/APIs, they don’t really stray too far from what you might expect a stereotypical blog or blogger needs.

Ghost is a beautiful solution that is great for people who want to create just a blog.
