Groove Music gets much requested gapless audio feature for Windows 10 Mobile

<p dir="ltr">Groove Music has snagged a pretty notable update on Windows 10 Mobile this evening. While it may not be the biggest update, it does contain one new feature that people have been clamoring for: Gapless playback.</p>
<p dir="ltr">That's right, you can now enjoy listening to an album or playlist without any break in between songs. This is especially handy if you happen to be listening to a full album that was recorded with the intention of songs melding together.</p>
<p dir="ltr">This has been a long requested feature on the Groove Music feedback page for a while now, so it's great to see that Microsoft has listened and brought it out in full force. To grab the latest Groove Music update and start slinging some tunes sans-gaps, be sure to hit up the link to the Windows Store below.</p>

<p dir="ltr">Minecraft: Story Mode is now available in the Play Store. This is the first of five episodes called The Order of the Stone. The game developers behind it are Telltale Games. They have made many other popular games like Game of Thrones, The Walking Dead, and Tales from the Borderlands.</p>
<p dir="ltr">The game cost an awkward $6.21, but is sure to be tonsof fun. <p dir="ltr">If you’re a frequent Lyft customer, you will love the new update the company has just started rolling out for its Android application. As from today, providing you have the latest version of the client installed on your smartphone, you’ll be able to see the basics of every ride you’ve ever taken. This consists of an A-to-B overview, the date and finally the price.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Installing the upgrade couldn’t be easier. All you have todo is open up the Play Store, swipe in from the left-hand side of the screen, select ‘My Apps’ and click on ‘Lyft’, then hit the update button. Sadly, this upgrade doesn’t bring any new functionality to the application, but it does transport a ton of patches all geared to providing users with a smoother, more enjoyable browsing experience.</p>

Dropbox introduces ‘Paper,’ a better way to work together

<p dir="ltr">Dropbox, that’s right, the company known for its cloud service just introduced a new editing suite and they’re calling it ‘Paper.’ If you’re familiar with Google Docs, the program will sound pretty familiar. Paper aims at redefining a user-friendly editing software that’s simple and easy to use.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Dropbox’s new editing program, Paper, has many useful tools and shortcuts using keyboard inputs making things easy and intuitive. Paper includes a large variety of stickers to play around with, but can also get important work done in a timely manner. With Paper, the company introduced a feature similar to what we see on Google Docs called ‘collaboration.’ With this, one can invite another to edit documents simultaneously.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Paper is available on the web and additionally on mobile in the Beta stage. The software is a bit buggy especially on mobile so one could expect an update to arrive shortly patching some of the present errors and glitches. However, from what we have seen so far, Paper sounds promising however, it will need to go above and beyond if it wants to get on pace with competitors. ‘NBA 2K16′ is now available for download in the Play Store for $7.99

<p dir="ltr">2K Games has released the new NBA 2K16for mobile on the Play Store, for those of you who enjoy gaming on your smartphone. </p>
<p dir="ltr">The new NBA 2K16 includes new rosters as well as enhanced graphics and player models. The game finally has the career option , known as MyCAREER, as well as the blacktop mode that was previously only available to the console variant. </p>
<p dir="ltr">The game also includes new soundtracks from DJ Mustard, DJ Khaled as well as DJ Premier. Euroleague teams are now available, and the game has new courts, equipment and other updated content. </p>

<p dir="ltr">For its 18th birthday, Yahoo decided to revamp its Mail app, giving it a new material design inspired look and more powerful features, such as the capability to add other email accounts, and allowing the user to sign-in without a password thanks to the new Yahoo Account Key functionality.</p>
<p dir="ltr"> Yahoo claims that the app is faster and more responsive thanks to new technology that powers the app. As you can see in the video below, the app seems to be snappier and more responsive, and transitions seem to be running very smoothly.</p>
<p dir="ltr"> The search feature has also been streamlined and designed to make the process of finding emails with keywords easier and faster thanks to smart suggestions, and the option of filtering email that you’ve sent or received.</p>
<p dir="ltr">The process of composing emails has been streamlined as well, and it is now easier to attach documents or files thanks to a new “+” button. One unique new feature is what Yahoo calls “me” mails, or email that you send to yourself as a reminder or note. All you have to do is long-press the compose button and the app will send that email to yourself automatically.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Yahoo has taken into account people that use multiple email services, and so has introduced a new multiple mailbox management feature. This allows users to switch between Outlook.com, Hotmail and AOL Mail within the Yahoo app, without having to sign-in and out every time.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Finally, to make the app easier to access without compromising security, the new Yahoo Mail app introduces Yahoo Account Key. This works by sending you a push notification every time you log in to confirm that you are actually the person trying to log in. This removes the hassle of inputting complicating password every time you wish to log in from your computer or mobile device.</p>

Motorola accidentally confirms DROID MAXX 2 in Moto Email update

<p dir="ltr">We know the Motorola DROID MAXX 2 is coming, we just don’t know when. Motorola isn’t trying to hide things, though, as they’ve accidentally revealed the existence of the MAXX 2 in their updated Moto Email application.</p>
<p dir="ltr">The screenshots for the app in question have a signature that says “Sent from my DROID MAXX 2,” which could be some elaborate trolling, but I think it’s pretty likely that somebody uploaded some screenshots a little early. </p>
<p dir="ltr">The screenshots have since been removed from the Play Store listing, which adds some credibility to that theory.</p>
<p dir="ltr">The leak isn’t the only thing interesting about the update, though. There are a handful of new features for current users, including better searching and syncing tools, an option to attach photos directly from the camera while composing emails, and better Gmail security. </p>
<p dir="ltr">Most of these are things that other email clients have long since adopted, but if you’re using the stock Motorola email client, you’ll probably want to grab this update anyway.</p>

<p dir="ltr">Android 6.0 has arrived, and with it comes a whole lot of fantastic little changes.It wasn't always easy to answer the question "What is Android?" in a single sentence that adequately explained everything. </p>
<p dir="ltr">Android has always been a complex, almost out of control thing in the way it it constantly changed and adjusted to suit the needs of whoever is using it. While that's an exciting thing to watch unfold from a technical perspective, explaining this to someone who just wants a smartphone to check Facebook and play some video games is mostly just confusing.</p>
<p dir="ltr">With Android 5.0 Lollipop, with Material Design taking over the interface and Google's apps taking a more active approach to encouraging use all throughout the UI, an easy answer to that seemingly simple question might have been that this was now Google's Operating System. </p>
<p dir="ltr">This year, with Android 6.0 Marshmallow, we're seeing a level of refinement to Material Design and to the underlying features that came with it. That refinement in many places includes the ability to substitute Google's apps and services with whatever you want, and at the same time making it easier for developers to build those alternatives and have them work just as well as what Google offers by default.</p>

Inside Marshmallow: What is Doze, how do I use it and what does it do?

<p dir="ltr">Android Marshmallow has changes deep in the operating system that can allow your phone (or tablet) to get better battery life. We see this mentioned with every operating system update from every company that makes smart devices, but this time they mean it.</p>
<p dir="ltr">EnterDoze. If the name reminds you of a pleasant nap while nothing pressing is going on, you've figured out what it is. It's a set of changes and rules that will put your phone to sleep when it's idle, which means you're not using as much of that precious juice from your battery. </p>
<p dir="ltr">It sounds simple (and it is) but there are a few things to know.You won't have to do anything to use the new Doze feature. There are no switches or settings you need to toggle, and once you've updated to Marshmallow it just works. That is, when it's supposed to work.</p>
<p dir="ltr">And that's the thing. You won't see any benefit from Doze while your phone is in your pocket and you're working or at school. Things need to be idle, and that means really idle.</p>
<p dir="ltr">For Doze to kick in, your phone needs to be sitting still with the screen off, and not connected to a charger. That means no moving around and nudging the gyro or other motion sensors, no touching the screen or the buttons and no waving your hand around in front of it if you're using a phone like the new phones from Motorola that have motion detection on the front bezel. Set it down, and leave it alone.</p>
<p dir="ltr">After a while, everything goes to sleep. Well, almost everything. You'll still get notified when "high-priority" apps need your attention. That means things like phone calls or SMS messages can get through (and thus waking up your dozing phone) as well as any app that declares itself as high-priority. Other things, like email notifications or Clash of Clans telling you your gold mine has leveled up aren't going to come in and wake your phone up.</p>
<p dir="ltr">And yes, this sounds like there is potential for abuse by developers who want to declare their app as high-priority. But Google has thought of this, and has a pretty good way to curtail any devious developers — high-priority notifications that aren't part of your carrier network (calls and texts) have to come through a Google Cloud Messaging server. </p>
<p dir="ltr">When they find someone abusing the system, and subsequently keeping your phone from dozing as intended, they can take action. We assume this means those notifications can no longer come through as high-prioity, but we also hope there is tar and feathers involved.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Abuse of high priority messages have a special difference from other things like notifications: they must go through Google servers, so Google can monitor and modify what is being sent to devices. If apps abuse these for other things besides their intended use, we will be able to stop that abuse without touching any software on the device. —Dianne Hackborne, Android Framework engineer</p>
<p dir="ltr">This doesn't mean you never get any notifications while your phone is idle. Google uses what they call an "Idle maintenance window" where they pick up any notifications that may be available in one big batch. Then your phone can quickly go back to sleep. This means Dozeisn't really a substitute for any Do-Not-Disturb settings.</p>
<p dir="ltr">So does all this dozing make a difference? It looks like it does. Most people are reporting much better standby battery life — Doze doesn't help while you're using your phone — and it looks like things are working just like Google described.</p>
<p dir="ltr"> Of course, people using their phones on a network with a poor connection are still seeing battery drain while idle, because Doze doesn't stop your phone from searching for a better signal to latch onto. I can fiddle with Project Fidialer codes and force either Sprint or T-Mobile as the carrier, and see better battery life from whichever works better where I'm at.</p>
<p dir="ltr"> A very poor signal will still kill your battery. But Doze is a great idea that was implemented well, and will be a great addition to Android for most of us.Of course, the idea of your phone not using power while you're not using your phone or by putting features to sleep while idle isn't new. </p>
<p dir="ltr">We've seen apps try to do the same thing with limited degrees of success. Adding it as a default method directly into the operating system takes away much of the guesswork and should provide a great experience for most of us.More about Doze from the Android Developer team</p>

<p dir="ltr">SEOUL, Oct. 15, 2015 ― Owners of LG Electronics' (LG) G4 smartphone will be the first in the world to receive the Android 6.0 Marshmallow OS. LG G4 owners in Poland will begin receiving their M upgrade beginning next week with other markets in Europe, Asia and the Americas to follow.</p>

Here's what's been fixed and what's broken in the Windows 10 Mobile preview build 10549

<p dir="ltr">Microsoft has released the Windows 10 Mobile preview build 10549 to members of the Windows Insider team. It has also published a list of what's been fixed compared to the earlier build and what known issues are still in this new build.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Windows Insider head Gabriel Aul posted the list of the fixed problems in build 10549:The Windows Camera app no longer crashes when certain applications launch it to capture a picture.</p>
<p dir="ltr">We fixed an issue where the touch keyboard would get dismissed every time you sent a message, which made sending 2+ texts in quick succession difficult.</p>
<p dir="ltr">We fixed an issue where swiping away a notification was causing the notification icon to appear top of your screen.Screenshots were not being properly saved resulting in many top social messenger apps such as WeChat, WhatsApp, LINE, WeiBo, and QQ unable to find saved screenshots. This has been fixed.</p>
<p dir="ltr">We fixed an issue where you couldn't cannot launch apps saved on SD cards after reinserting your SD card.Pinch to zoom should work properly in the Maps app now.We fixed an issue where trying to set a customring or text tone for a contact shows a black screen for 10 seconds, then does nothing.</p>
<p dir="ltr">We have added back vibrate-only alarms.We have fixed call-blocking.There's also a short list of known issues:After upgrade, you might be missing a few apps. If you experience this, the workaround is to reset your phone.</p>
<p dir="ltr">After rebooting your phone, you won't see notifications, such as new messages, until you unlock your phone for the first time. After that, you should see notifications for new messages just fine. This bug is fixed in a later build.</p>
<p dir="ltr">You will be unable to make calls with Skype for Business, WhatsApp and other apps after upgrading to this build. The workaround is to uninstall and reinstall these apps from the Store.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Of course, the biggest known issue with this build is that people who have the previous 10536 build will have to downgrade back to Windows Phone 8.1 in order to get the new build 10549.</p>

Google Cardboard to watch 360-degree videos on YouTube

<p dir="ltr">Google announced 360-degree videos for YouTube a few months ago along with Cardboard support. What this means is you can now watch certain videos in a 360-degree setting or have a 3D experience with a VR headset, all from within the standard YouTube app.</p>
<p dir="ltr">The setup is quite easy and anyone can experience it right away. The most important thing to remember is this done through the YouTube app on your phone.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Step 1<br>
You have two options for step one. You can either open the YouTube app on your phone and search for this crazy long title, [360 VR] 서울호서예술전문학교(HAC) 실용무용학부 댄스(Dance) Teaser, or read this article on your phone and click the link supplied. Remember to open the link in the YouTube app if it ask you.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Step 2<br>
Launch the video you want to watch. In this case I suggest this Japanese dance group. It gives you a great 360-degree experience as there are multiple people around you to look at. The video is kind of short, so you may need to watch it twice if your eyes don’t adjust the first time around.</p>
<p dir="ltr"> Also, with all 360-degree videos, move your head slowly to look around. This makes the video easier to watch and minimizes any motion sickness people sometimes get.The video above is the test video we are using. It must be watched on the YouTube website or mobile app for this to work. The video above will not be able to do anything special on our site. If you press play the video will look flattened and not at all 360 degrees. </p>
<p dir="ltr">Click the YouTube button in the bottom corner to be directed to it on YouTube’s site. If you are on a computer, drag the screen around with the mouse. You should see everything moving around and be able to see all the people.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Also, remember to set the resolution to the max for the best possible viewing experience. On your mobile phone, click the three dots in the top right corner. Mine is at 1440s as I am using the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge. Obviously, the higher the resolution your phone is, the better the video will look.</p>
<p dir="ltr">If you don’t have a Google Cardboard or compatible virtual reality device, you are done here. Physically move your phone around and watch the view change. It’s pretty cool already, but the next step is where it gets awesome.</p>
<p dir="ltr"> You must have a Google Cardboard for this to work. I am using this one that is only $16.99 (currently), but Google also gives you many other options. They are all the same basically and offer very slight differences.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Step 3<br>
Get your Google Cardboard or equivalent device and hit the Cardboard icon at the bottom right.You will notice the video spits in two.At this point, put your phone inside the viewer and pressplay by flicking the switch on your Cardboard or just touch the screen before you put your phone in.</p>

<p dir="ltr">The BlackBerry Priv is coming to the public soon with pre-registrations opening today. This is basically a way for BlackBerry to see how many people are interested inthe Priv and is not a pre-order to buy one.</p>
<p dir="ltr">If you sign up, BlackBerry will email you about updates about the Priv, such as, when you can actually purchase it. They have also unveiled some specs, confirming it will have a 3410mAh battery.– Stunning 5.4” dual-curved screen– Long lasting 3410 mAh battery– Both touch and physical keyboards– Schneider-Kreuznach®certified camera– Extraordinary audio quality</p>
<p dir="ltr">Other specs we know it will have is a 5.4-inch Quad HD (2560×1440) display with curved edges, Qualcomm Snapdragon 808 processor, 3GB of RAM, 32GB of internal storage (with microSD card slot), 18MP / 5MP cameras, Android 5.1 Lollipop, and slide-out physical keyboard. We have also already covered some camera samples, which look pretty good. </p>
<p dir="ltr">I am actually pretty interested in this device. It’s very different compared to everything else out there.BlackBerry also say the“PRIV introduces the exclusive DTEK™ by BlackBerry warning system app to provide you with the power of privacy”. I assume this means it will scan for malware on your device.</p>
<p dir="ltr">My favorite part is the little box at the end of the form that says“I am interested in purchasing 10+ devices on behalf of my organization”. I can only imagine how many people will be checking off that box with fake information just to screw with them.</p>

NVIDIA Shield Android TV update 2.1 fixes black levels over HDMI and adds new apps and games

<p dir="ltr">NVIDIA has updated their Shield TV set top box to software version 2.1, which is overall looking like a pretty minor update. </p>
<p dir="ltr">The new software fixes some compatibility issues with HDMI and improves black levels on screen over HDMI. Nothing major there, but a welcome fix for anyone having issues after the 2.0 update.</p>
<p dir="ltr"> The Shield TV isn’t getting any new features with this update, per se, but NVIDIA is loading a few apps in with the update. You’ll get a new Showtime and Disney Movies app for watching shows and movies, and the update includes two new games; Contrast, and Pix the Cat.</p>
<p dir="ltr"> It sounds like NVIDIA is anticipating lots of kids having access to a Shield TV.</p>

HTC One A9 gets detailed with specs and clear photos

<p dir="ltr">The cat’s out of the bag a little early for HTC, as the OneA9 has been pretty clearly detailed and imaged thanks to a French phone retailer. </p>
<p dir="ltr">The site lists the A9 at a pricey €599.90 with just a few specs, but that iPhone-esque design we’ve seen leaked over and over is pretty much confirmed at this point.If you’re interested in hardware, the A9 will use a 1080p display and sport a 13 megapixel camera. </p>
<p dir="ltr">It comes in black or white and looks as if it’ll use a fingerprint scanner at the bottom of the front of the device, skipping the rear-facing fingerprint scanners that we've seen in LG devices and Nexus phones. </p>
<p dir="ltr">It looks eerily similar to a Samsung home button, but the press images still have HTC using on-screen buttons, so it’s possible that the button will only function as a fingerprint scanner and nothing else.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Interestingly, there are no BoomSound speakers in sight. HTC is going with a traditional speaker design with this one.</p>
<p dir="ltr">The actual announcement for the A9 should happen next week, but until then, this is probably the best look at the device we’re going to get.</p>

What Panos was telegraphing about those new Lumias

<p dir="ltr">Microsoft's Windows 10 Devices event on Tuesday goes down as one of their best shows yet. The presentation was convincing, there were no real lags, and the products announced were all awe-inspiring. Well, almost.</p>
<p dir="ltr">One area though that was rather peculiar was in regards to Panos Panay's presentation on new Lumias. Specifically, the short duration and lack of enthusiasm were quite evident. It felt like he wanted to get through it get on to the real story, those new Surfaces. </p>
<p dir="ltr">I even joked that Microsoft may squeeze in the Lumia 550 during the event, and sure enough it got about 15 seconds of stage time.Not the Microsoft Lumias you were looking for?I have been talking about these new Lumias for some time on our#AskDanWindows series specifically about the origins of the phones.</p>
<p dir="ltr"> It should be clear that these new Lumias are carryovers from the Nokia days and not"pure" Microsoft devices. That is not a slight against how good they are – something we still don't know much aboutbut rather a clear observation about how Microsoft feels about these phones.</p>
<p dir="ltr">It should be obvious that Microsoft stands firmly behind these devices like any other Lumias. As they should, they pack more hardware and features into one device that many Android ones spread over a range. Expandable memory, Qi wireless, an iris scanner, Gorilla Glass 4, liquid cooling, Continuum, and a killer camera are all a big deal.</p>
<p dir="ltr"> Still, they feel like stopgaps a bit too.Remember, these Lumias started at Nokia during a big transition time for the company. They were not designed from scratch by Microsoft something I expect to happen sometime in May 2016 with their long-gestating Intel-powered phone aka "Surface phone," which I mentioned back in July (see below).Microsoft's Satya Nadella says if OEMs don't make Windows phones they will </p>
<p dir="ltr">What was on stage<br>
When you take a look at the Band 2, Surface Pro 4, Surface Book and HoloLens,there is a clear cutting-edge design aesthetic running through those devices. The Band 2's fantastic display, which is much more touch-sensitive is a carry overfrom the Surface. Even the Lumia 950 XL's liquid cooling system is borrowed from the Surface.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Should we be surprised at any of that? Not at all. Panos Panay is in charge of all Microsoft hardware taking over the Lumia division in July. Panay even hedges at the beginning of his Lumia presentation saying he has only worked with that team for a "very short time." I read that – as did many others – as code for 'Hey, these are notmyphones, and I would have done things differently.' It's distancing.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Thinking about it makes sense. The Microsoft hardware team clearly agonizes over minute details in their creations. When handling the Band 2 you can feel the engineering quality. And don't get me started on how radically insane the Surface Book is from a design perspective.When you see all of Microsoft's new premium hardware and then glance over at the Lumias you cannot help but see something is, well,off.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Continuum is just the beginning Microsoft Continuumfor the phone is easily one of the most interesting aspects of the new Lumias. However, being able to run Universal Windows Apps on a large display means you are carrying a Windows RT device around with you. Granted, in Windows 10 the UWA model is much better, but you still cannot run x86 apps on your phone.</p>
<p dir="ltr">If I had to guess – and once again this should be evident – Microsoft keeps talking about "Windows 10 in your pocket" and that idea only really resonates if you can run full desktop apps.I have reported before about a Microsoft-Intel phone, and my bet is Microsoft's goalis for you to be able to run x86 apps with Continuum from your phone. What we see with the Lumia 950 and Lumia 950 XL is one step towards that goal. You can hear more about that in Episode 4 of#AskDan Windows from August, including some well-informed foreshadowing about this "Surface phone".</p>
<p dir="ltr">#AskDan Windows Episode 4 - When can we expect Win10 Mobile with Intel?This goal is not easy, but the technology to enable it to happen is finally within reach. Just listening to Microsoft's language about Continuum tells you that yeah, they want you to have a full PC in your pocket (yes, and we've come full circle with the PocketPC branding).I still don't know if we will have a Surface phone per se, but you can bet that Microsoft is going to go for something crazy now that Panay and his group are heading things. Remember, Surface is more than just a name, it's anidea. These Lumias don't fit.</p>
<p dir="ltr">TakeawayThis situation is one of those "good news / bad news" moments. The bad news is what I have been saying for months: these are not pure Microsoft phones. But hey, new high-end phones with Nokia DNA is still a good problem to have. I have no concern about picking up a Lumia 950 for my usage (I worry more about the OS part).The upshot is we have witnessed Microsoft being very serious about hardware, not just in attempts but delivering high-end, premium, hardware that leave people shocked.Is there any reason to believe Microsoft cannot do the same with phones?They can and I'm sure they will.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Just ask yourself:<br>
Would the same group who made Band, Surface, now Xbox and even HoloLens make the Lumia 950?Probably not. So, if those phones feel out of place, well, it's because they are. Panos Panay only took on the phone development team in late July. That should tell you something about whatever comes next. Does that mean you should skip the Lumia 950 and 950 XL? Ultimately,that depends on your wallet. If you don't mind getting a phone a year – which is where things are going now – then I'd grab a new Lumia and use it until Microsoft's next big thing. I am and have no qualms about it.</p>
<p dir="ltr">I think the important message after Tuesday's event is that Microsoft is very serious about hardware –all hardware – and we still have to see their full effort in every category. It doesn't even matter how well these new Lumias do, to be honest. <p dir="ltr">Apple did it, and Microsoft proved Tuesday they can do it too. Doing yet another high-end phone won't save Windows 10 Mobile, but Microsoft has shown they can go beyond just specs and I think they will.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Buckle in, folks, we're in for a very exciting Microsoft lead future. You should be convinced that Microsoft and phones are here to stay. We haven't seen everything yet.</p>

Microsoft's 'you are the hub' Windows 10 strategy is about us and here is why it matters

<p dir="ltr">No single device will be the hub of activity forever. The hub is you."These were among the closing words from Microsoft's CEO Satya Nadella as he concluded Microsoft's highly anticipated, and in my estimation, successful#Windows10 Devices event on October 6th, 2015.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Nadella's closing remarks summarized a dynamic event that seemed to resonate with the audience. <br>
Beginning with the Xbox and ending with the world's most powerful laptop, the newSurface Book, the event communicated one major theme. Though the day was a means to showcase devices it was the Universal Windows Platform took center stage. High-end first party hardware were simply the stage lights used to illuminate Microsoft's mobility play: their universal device agnostic platform.</p>
<p dir="ltr">The entire range of this family of devices runs on Microsoft'sUniversal Windows Platform (UWP). And of course, this platform has the users experience at its core.I shared in, "Microsoft is positioned beyond the mobile curve," that the future of computing is "device-less" and the primary computing device is the cloud. Nadella's summation of the day's events seemed to validate those words.</p>
<p dir="ltr"> "…The hub is you."Perfect 10Terry Myerson opened the event with the staggering stat that in just ten weeks time 110 million devices are now running Windows 10. In less than three months there are more devices running Windows 10 than there are running Apple's OS X.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Microsoft's goal is to reach 1 billion devices running Windows 10 within 2-3 years. This initial pace toward that goal is reassuring. Particularly considering that Windows is a universal platform hosting a family of devices. As such, just as a human family with all the variations among its members shares common genes, the Microsoft family of devices share a common core.</p>
<p dir="ltr">This common core allows developers to target the entire UWP (Universal Windows Platform) with their apps. There are currently a limited number of universal apps available, but the demonstration of core apps like Office reveals the key claim of the platform. Namely the seamless transition of a user's experiences across devices or device states (in the case of continuum).</p>
<p dir="ltr">Windows 10 adoption has had derivative effects on Microsoft's ecosystem as well. According to Terry Myerson, in the three months since its release there have been 1.25 billion visits to the app store. That translates to a four-time increase in revenue for developers.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Money talks. This growth speaks volumes to the claim by Microsoft that their massive PC install base could be used to bolster the UWP. Now I don't know if it wasthese numbers or backroom negotiations that have influenced coming partnerships,but it is good to hear that certain popular mainstream apps will be going universal in Windows 10. </p>
<p dir="ltr">Facebook's Instagram and Messenger along with Soda Saga and other apps will soon be experienced across users devices as Universal Windows apps.The additional fact, per Myerson that users are spending more time in apps such as Netflix rather than the website is key to universal apps success.</p>
<p dir="ltr"> As these and other universal apps carry user's experiences across devices, Nadella's word's echo, "You are the hub."Gaming Though Xbox news wasn't at the top of the October 6th event wish list, gaming is core to the Windows experience. The continuity across Microsoft's gaming platform, which encompasses Windows and Xbox, deserves some attention.</p>
<p dir="ltr">PC gaming caters to a vast audience. Hardcore Xbox gamers are also a large demographic. Thus Microsoft, by way of its OS and console is devoted to gaming. Through Windows 10 Redmond has brought those two disparate mediums, console and PC, closer together.</p>
<p dir="ltr">The 120 years of gameplay streamed from the Xbox to Windows 10 devices in less than three months, per Myerson, is a powerful testimony of this universal platform. Windows 10's provisioning of a means to allow hardcore game experiences to follow users through their PC's, tablets, laptops and 2-in-1s to any room in the house has clearly resonated with gamers.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Gamers can play Xbox games, controller and all, from their PCs as if they were playing from the traditional position in front of the television. The device no longer matters. Microsoft is indeed proving that Windows 10 is a universal platform centered around the user's experiences. </p>

<p dir="ltr">Cortana<br>
In the three months since Windows 10 arrived with Cortana in tow (for some regions), the personal assistant "has answered over 1 billion questions," Myerson shared. Users are talking to Cortana. With her cross platform moves to Android and iOS via the Windows 10 companion apps and her inherent position in Windows Phone she will follow users anywhere. With her handy 'Notebook' where everything she knows about users is stored, she will remember interests, appointments, favorite places and more regardless of the device she will assist users from. Cortana users, "You are the hub."</p>
<p dir="ltr">HoloLens<br>
HoloLens is likely Microsoft's most ambitious product. The device seems like something out of science-fiction. The mixed-reality gaming demonstration where a wearable, form-shifting hologram transformed from a hand borne laser gauntlet to a shield simply reaffirmed that feeling. Yet HoloLens is real. As is Microsoft's virtual reality platform, Windows Holographic. Both present an opportunity for developers and OEM partners.</p>
<p dir="ltr">One point Microsoft was certain to stress is that HoloLens is a full, tether less, wearable computer. Though the presentation focused on gaming, HoloLens has potentially profound applications in other areas as well. Science, healthcare, education, architecture and more can benefit from the connected mixed-reality environment HoloLens provides. The infinite malleability of a virtual environment is digital clay that can be molded by the creative imaginations of developers. The possibilities seem endless. After the release of the HoloLens Developer Kit in Q1 2016 for $3000, we will begin to see the vast imaginations of developers pushing creativity to the limits with the platform.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Additionally because HoloLens runs on Window 10, a user's experience will follow them to this device as well."In my case I have a Band. I have my phone. I have my Surface. I have my Surface Hub, and I'll have aHoloLens. And that ...is all Windows 10. And I'll seamlessly move between all of these. I want the notifications....data and apps to flow between all of these things."-NadellaYou are the hub.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Productive like a boss<br>
With an infectious, "I'm just being me" presentation styleBryan Ropertalked to us about how the 5.2"Lumia 950and 5.7"950 XLcould make us more productive. Productive like a boss to be exact. Since these devices are packing 808 hexacore and 810 octacore chipsets respectively, keeping them cool with the liquid cooling system akin to that found in the Surface is important.The specs on both these devices are comparable to what rivals have in the market. But as I shared in Highs and Lows Part V: Continuum, high-end specs is just the price of admission. They simply get Microsoft a seat at the table. Windows phones needed a differentiator and Continuum is it.</p>
<p dir="ltr"> Nadella described these devices as the most productive phones onthe planet and asserted that they could be a user's only computing device.Bryan demonstrated this point effectively. He gave the most practical and comprehensive demonstration of Continuum we've seen to date. With a simple connection to the Microsoft Display Dock (though wireless connection is supported), which connected the device to a larger screen, keyboard and mouse, the Lumia seamlessly transformed into a PC-like experience.</p>
<p dir="ltr">From the Start menu, multitasking, shortcut keys, taskbar, high-speed USB file transfer and more the experience was very much that of a familiar PC. Even an astute onlooker could have easily mistaken the UI on screen as the recently released Windows 10 OS.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Additionally, the ability to continue to use the phone as aphoneand as an independent second screen fortifies the experience. This functionality is something similar tech like that found in theMotorola Atrixwas not capable of doing.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Finally, the power of Universal apps allowsapps to scale appropriately to fit any screen through Continuum. This capability places the Continuum enabled device in the "background" while pulling the users experience forward, allowing theuser to work seamlessly without fussing over hardware. Lumia users, "You are the hub."On the Bandwagon Nadella described the Microsoft Band as a platform of sensors and a cloud service. This description conveys how the Band fits within Microsoft's ecosystem. It's not just hardware. By contrast, Apple's positioning of the Apple Watch is laser-focused on its physical design as seen in an early 12-page spread in Vogue. The Band, however, embodies the vast scope of Microsoft's Health platform.</p>
<p dir="ltr">As Iwrote in the past, the potential licensing of the now 11 sensors to new and old partner OEMs allows Microsoft technology to permeate the industry. Microsoft can effectively become the platform that empowers partner OEM wearable devices. Additionally the cross-platform compatibility of the Band and Microsoft's Health platform allows users to monitor and track their health from any ecosystem and across any device. You arethe hub.Surface, nurture the rhythmAs the tablet that can replace your laptop, the Surface line began Microsoft's introduction of hybrid devices that conform to a user's needs. The event appropriately ended with that line of devices. The newSurface Pro 4, among other things, has a better display, keyboard, pen and is faster than its predecessor. Panos Panay asserted that itis the tablet that will replace your laptop.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Microsoft then introduced what they've dubbed the ultimate laptop, their newSurface Book. Panay shared that this laptop is the thinnest most powerful PC ever built. He then played a clip where the screen of this laptop was removed from the base. To the surprise and delight of onlookers, the Surface Book was also a tablet. Nadella later referred to this device as a clipboard that becomes a laptop. The ability for the world's most powerful laptop to become the world's most powerful tablet provides great opportunities for versatility for power users. A user need not switch devices to accomplish various tasks. The device transitions with the need. Surface users,"You are the hub."</p>

As devices come and go, you persist...What matters most is the mobility of experiences not the mobility of a single device.–NadellaWithout question, the simplest quantifiable number is one. When complex issues are simplified by reducingthe number of variables any challenge is usually more easily managed. Ironically Apple has recently increased its number of Operating Systems with the addition of tvOS to iOS, OS X, and watchOS. Google is struggling with Android and Chrome.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Microsoft committed to creating one core for a family of devices. A single OS for developers to target and for user's computing experiences to exist within. This transition met with hiccups as some Windows Phone 7 users were left hanging at Windows Phone 7.8. Microsoft was mocked as they made UI missteps with Window 8/8.1.Through corporate restructuring with the"One Microsoft" theme underpinning their efforts, Microsoft ultimately succeeded in simplifying a complex issue. They have pioneered a single OS vision across all devices. A Universal Windows Platform with the users experiences at its core.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Windows 10 is about us, the users. It succeeds like no other platform with providing truly personal computing. It is an evolving service. Nadella's cloud-first, mobile-first ambition reduces the sea of devices to a single "device-less platform", where the primary computing "device" is the cloud.</p>
<p dir="ltr">And indeed Nadella confirmed this earlier assessment in his closing to the historic#Windows10 Devices event when he told us - "we are the hub."</p>

Google Now on Tap not working with some Google Apps accounts

<p dir="ltr">As Android Marshmallow starts to roll out to user’s Nexus devices, there are some finding one of the benefits of the updated operating system is not available to them. Users who have older, free versions of Google Apps are not able to turn on Now on Tap. </p>
<p dir="ltr">The dialog box where users normally configure their devices to use Now on Tap displays the option, even for users who log in with their legacy Google Apps account. However, the system will turn Now on Tap back off as soon as a user tries to turn it on. </p>
<p dir="ltr">At present, the only workaround appears to be signing up for a regular Gmail account, but that means giving up apps that a user may have paid for and trying to coordinate a transfer of all old account data.</p>

Android 6.0 Marshmallow update begins rolling out over-the-air

<p dir="ltr">Google took to its blog to announce that it has begun rolling out the much anticipated Android 6.0 over-the-air update for Nexus users. It brings with it a whole bevy of cool new features, such as Now on Tap,better battery life, and more.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Google released the factory images for many of its Nexus devices earlier today, allowing users to manually install it. For those not interested in going that route, you should be getting a prompt to download the update over-the-air shortly. </p>
<p dir="ltr">If you haven’t gotten it yet, just head on into your devices settings menu and check for it manually.Keep in mind that the Nexus 4 and Nexus 7 (2012) will not be getting the update. However, it won’t be long before it’s made available via a custom ROM, but who knows how well it’ll actually perform.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Now we just sit and wait for Android 6.0 on flagships from manufacturers like LG and Samsung. Anyone get the update on their Nexus device yet?</p>

Google might be releasing Windows 10 apps at Microsoft’s upcoming event

<p dir="ltr">Google currently offers its own selection of apps on both Android and iOS, but Microsoft’s Windows platform has been mostly absent from that list over the past few years. </p>
<p dir="ltr">There are a handful of unofficial apps, some mobile websites, and plenty of alternatives on Microsoft’s store, but Google hasn’t made a serious effort to compete on Microsoft’s platform. It’s looking like that will change this year.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Rumors from an Arabic website suggest Google will be announcing Windows 10 apps for its services at Microsoft’s upcoming event, although there’s no detail on exactly which apps will be officially ported for Windows Phone. </p>
<p dir="ltr">There are some safe bets, like Gmail and Hangouts and YouTube, but I think we can all hope to see Play Music and some others make their way to Microsoft’s side of the fence, too. </p>
<p dir="ltr">Google does offer all of these services to Apple users, after all, and Microsoft has a pretty strong offering of apps on everyone’s mobile app store, so it’d be nice to see Google embrace the third biggest OS on the market, even if it is trailing significantly behind the first two.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Microsoft’s event kicks off tomorrow, so we won’t have to wait much longer to see how true this rumor ends up being.</p>
